This is/was the session laying down the song, which was only written 10 minutes beforehand, hence the reason I am reading off the lyric sheets. This was the second of 4 takes, all of which were flawed in some way (not least Take 3, which has the edifying sight and sound of my thumbnail shattering off in the final verse), but I like 'em raw in any case. Let's be honest, this song ain't a lullaby to start with. I'm surprised how short the running time is. When I was writing the lyric, the accompanying tune I had in my head was virtually the same, but at a much slower, rather insidious pace - "It's ... beat beat beat ... getting dark .... beat beat beat ...", and with a gentler vocal ; come performing time, it insisted it be speeded up, with little or no between-chord breaks, and to hell with your 62-year-old lungs. New day, new song. We all remember those tentative 'eyes-first-meeting' moments, and this song is about that feeling: "Where will it go?" "Does he/she feel the same?" "Has this got some road in it?" "Should I pretend she has a loose eyelash and gently brush the imaginary errant away to gauge her reaction...?" I must point out, I am the writer of the song, not a participant in it. But I am honoured to have been inspired by the lady in the song to write it. I won't mention her name, at least until I see her again and ask if she wants me to, but there's a clue to it in the lyric, if you enjoy semantic puzzles. This is take 2, of a 5-take 'just-been-written' demo session. By a quirk of bad handwriting, those 5 cuts of the song actually have 3 different sets of music, as well as 4 different arrangements. This is the first version with the 'correct' music, albeit it came to me in the key of F originally (the days of that pitch are long gone, so I took it to G).
