Even if you don't watch any of the video... the lesson is to work on your own bike to keep costs down and have the knowledge to easily diagnose when something goes wrong. Filming a video today about helping out a friend with a mechanical issue on their old car - working on your old bike teaches you a lot and at some point you end up saving enough money to pay for the cost of your bike. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES4DWBNSWLU
Fort Pike and Fort Macomb Facebook Events Page for Clean Up Days: https://www.facebook.com/pg/FortPikeandFortMacomb/events/?ref=page_internal
Would you like to help clean up the fort and enter the property legally? Click the link below to find out more about the upcoming clean-up volunteer days. DO NOT TRESPASS! Fort Pike is currently closed to the public. The fence and signs protect the state from legal responsibility if you enter the fort and are hurt on the premises. If you trespass anyway (AGAIN, DON'T), please respect the property and refrain from leaving with souvenirs or damaging the property by graffiti or vandalism. This is our national history, they don't make them anymore, and how we treat these sites will decide if our children and their children get to enjoy them or not. I HIGHLY encourage you to engage in clean-up of this and other sites which discourages trespassing and vandalism.

You can make a donation to the national park service, and I encourage you to do so with a check, utilizing the 'memo' section to declare your donation can only be used to the effort to reopen Fort Pike and no other purpose. Or make a donation without demand. That's a great thing to do.
President Monroe ordered the construction of Fort Pike (and several other structures) to protect our coast from foreign invasion after the war of 1812. The fort was used for training, staging, and a prison way-point through the years up until 1871. It was cared for officially before being abandoned in 1890. In 1972 it became a historical site. Apparently no cannons were ever fired from the fort, but they did have a hot shot oven to burn wooden ships. It was temporarily closed after several storms damaged it but re-opened each time. It has been closed since early 2015 due to budget cuts, arguably due to our governor Bobby Jindal leaving the state of Louisiana in financial ruin during his 2nd term due to his presidential ambitions. His first term policies made sense for the state and he easily won re-election, but he came into national attention/popularity, partially from his state of the union response speech in 2009. He thought he could make a presidential run and cut state funding to almost all services in an attempt to claim he was 'fiscally responsible' in comparison to president Obama. His 2nd term policies left our state in a bad situation that we are still recovering slowly from. It has cost considerably more to return the state to partial activity than what he 'saved' by shutting things down, and Fort Pike remaining closed is arguably one of the many consequences of his 2nd term policies. Another consequence of his policies is our educati

So... I have a lot of thoughts on this. Hindsight is 20/20. The guy honking SO CLOSE to me really set off my adrenaline. I wasn't angry, but definitely experienced the 'fight or flight' feeling.
I want to be the safest rider I can be, and I've already learned a lot from this. I welcome anyone's CONSTRUCTIVE feedback, but if you want to tell me what I should've done... instead tell me what you would have done IN THE MOMENT ... honestly... if you were me... or if you were the man in the minivan. We've ALL been here.
And we can ALL be better. I'm trying to be better. I'm hesitant to put this up, but I've learned SO MUCH from other riders sharing their videos, and because I learned from this... I think someone else will also. Even though I know their will be some judgy-no-ideas in the comments... it's worth it. Because I am a better rider now. And someone else is a better rider/driver now. It's your loss if you watch this and learn nothing.

I didn't know but found out first hand unemployment leaves you in dire straights unless you aren't working at all, or you're working so little that you would DIE. So... I am worried about all the folks who have worked too much to receive unemployment, but haven't been allowed to work enough to EAT. Are we going to see looting?
I say in the video I'm stressed about the PPP 'loan' - I was told I was approved, but heard horror stories about people in round one being LIED to that they were approved and the money running out... another horror story of a guy applying for $22,500 and the banker forgot to write the 22, so he only got $500 and nobody could help him... LONG STORY SHORT... the funding came through and my family will EAT for the next two months, BUT... I am worried about other people being HUNGRY.
