It's that special time of year where the Thai's celebrate and pay respect to the goddess of water after the rainy season. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, so the exact date of the festival changes every year.
The name could be translated as "to float a basket," and comes from the tradition of making Krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river.
The beauty contests that accompanies the festival is known as "Nopphamat Queen Contests" and you will see many beautiful young women adorned in bright and traditional Thai costume which is one of the best parts of the festival.
Although the loudspeakers were at full volume tonight, we still enjoyed our evening even if we were significantly deaf at the end of it!

Our Wednesday outing has predominantly involved us in finding an eatery for a special meal. Now that we are in a lockdown again and no table service, we're going to have to eat at home but we still like the idea of finding something special. Chanya found this place on Facebook and it is only 15 minutes from our house but they make these giant burger meals. From the looks of the pictures, one 399 baht burger meal could easily feed 4 people but we've chosen to be a little more varied in our choice today. Mind you, if you're ever out this way, you should think about dropping in just to order a giant burger!

In this video, I spend some time going through the testing process I’ve used to evaluate the two most common applications I use in dealing with the Thai spoken language. I must admit, I do struggle a bit with learning the Thai language but that probably stems from my analytical approach with day to day life. I am, after all, an engineer and a computer systems engineer to be more specific, so everything I do needs to have some logical process. Languages are certainly not logical and when it comes to the Thai language, it can be quite confusing.
The tests I’ve done today are between the default Google Translator app which should be installed on all Android OS phones. The link here will take you to the Google Play store if you don’t have it.

The second app I’ve referred to is a locally made translation app which has a clean and easy to use interface, but unfortunately, the application is only in Thai.

Prior to the shutdown of Thailands tourist industry, we used to have regular boys nights out in Bangkok, but now that the tourists have gone, the streets are quiet. Tim called me up and said he was visiting Bangkok for the first time after moving from Cha-Am so we called around to see if any of the other local boys wanted to join us for a get-together. I can always count on Jerry to hang out given that he lives in Phrom Phong but as it was a Thursday night, some of the others may have jobs to go to the next day so it can be hit or miss. I did reach out to Pat who is another up and coming vlogger here in Bangkok and you might want to check out his channel (link below). We started out at Suzy's Down Under Bar then went around to Soi 7 to see the new beer bars that have sprung up there recently. Our group gradually dissipated over the evening which left Jerry and me to finish the night off at Soi Cowboy. We can only hope that Thailand relaxes its visitor restrictions soon as the nightlife scene in Bangkok is almost gone now.

The more followers we gain on this channel also brings in more people who seem to have their own opinion on ladyboys and the whole LGBT community. Some of those opinions are positive, but alas, some are quite the opposite.
Today seemed like a good opportunity to bring up the whole 3rd gender topic given that my Aussie buddy here is also partnered with a male so it was an interesting discussion.
The takeaway point I was trying to get to here is that if you are planning to visit or live here in Thailand, you are going to need to adapt to the prevalence of 3rd gender people here. If you do, you will generally enjoy your time. if you don't, you will spend your time here being offended at every turn so grow up!

It's hard to get your head around when you try to fit everything in for your early retirement here in Thailand and you're given to wonder how you ever managed when you had a work-life career. All the restaurants are closed so we take mom to the optometrist to get her some much-needed glasses. Chanya also needs to get some because she's been getting a lot of eyestrain watching that massive TV she wanted. Of course, I won't say "I told you so" but that's how things go here in Thailand. While I'm waiting for the girls to get fitted with their new glasses, I take some time aside to talk about the tipping culture here in Thailand. I caught an ad for the DJI Pocket a few days ago and it looks like it could be a neat addition to my kit bag. The DJI website gave all the necessary specs on the camera, but I wanted to get a feel for it. The Central Plaza Westgate Mall in Bang Yai has a DJI store so I decided to take a drive out there to have a look at it.
I know the images and videos I looked at online gave the impression that the device is small, but when I actually held it, the realization finally sinks in. This camera is SMALL!
Anyway, at 13,500 Baht plus another 1,900 Baht for a 64gb memory card is certainly something I can put on my shopping list, so maybe I can look at getting it around my birthday time. The main reason for the new camera is for the portability and it does look simple enough that Chanya could use it as well which should give the videos some alternate perspective when we're out and about.
