Success with the wheels and now it is time for a large feeding. The worms consumed all the food in the trash can but seem to be slow on consuming the paper bedding.

Been only a few weeks but the worms are making short work of the cardboard bedding material and hamster waste. This is what I was hoping for although we will need to see how long the Aspen shavings take to breakdown.

Sorry about missing the opening but I didn't realize the camera plug disconnected when I hit record! Overall the Pine shavings are still easily recognizable after 8 months of being in a compost bin. I do wonder how long it might take them to fully breakdown!

Two weeks ago I added the output from a Vitamix Eco 5 Foodcycler to a worm bin that was a bit dried out and needed some new food. Now it is time to check and see how the worms responded.

It has been around 5 years since I built and loaded up a 2x4 foot bin at my parent's house. The bin has had nearly every type of fruit and veggie imaginable. Unfortunately, the worms and the weather are starting to take a toll on the wood and I think it might be time to see if I can fix it up. Before I start a project like that I thought it would be a good idea to show you the condition of the bin.
Just to give an idea of the weather the bin has endured we have had winters down to -6 degrees and summers at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the worms have made it through these conditions. My parents put in onions, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, watermelon, pumpkins, grapes, and tons of melons over the years. They used the compost in their garden and had some plants they never thought they would have from potatoes (grew in the worm bin) to honeydew. Not to mention some hostas that are massive from the fertile soil.
So here is the last update I plan on doing for this bin as I debate on trying to save it or not.

31 days in and I'm seeing something that is a bit concerning with my system. The system is finally full and can now sit for the 2-4 weeks before we dump it and take a look at the material and see if the worms can handle it! The last items added were primarily fruit and veggies although I did have a few more chicken bones.
