Panel 3: "Arts and Politics". The collection of art and the writing of calligraphy were traditionally associated with literati culture and practiced by members of the educated elite. Often these men of letters were also political figures who were quite active in realms of public service. Thus, the practices of collecting, writing and gathering were not without a political dimension and objective. This panel will address collecting as a political endeavor, its role in forming alliances and allegiances with like-minded individuals and political counterparts.
