Located near Nagoya Tower in the Sakae district, Oasis 21 is a multi-level recreational and commercial park equipped with a bus terminal. First opened to the public in 2002, Oasis 21’s major attraction is its oval roof glass structure, also known as “Spaceship Aqua”. The roof just happens to be filled with water, which not only creates an interesting visual effect, but also brings downs the temperature of the shopping area below.
Located near the Imperial Palace and the Yasukuni Shrine, Chidorigafuchi is a national Japanese cemetery and memorial for approximately 350,000 unidentified war dead of the Second World War. Despite its gloomy background, Chidorigafuchi is, once a year during hanami, the cherry blossom season, one of Tokyo’s hottest places to enjoy the cherry blossoms either by walking along Chidorigafuchi’s moat or by boat if you are patient enough to wait for hours before being able to rent one. Fantastic by day, Chidorigafuchi’s moat cherry blossoms are also worth checking at night too!

Often wrongly credited as one of the many beautiful temples of Kyoto, Enryakuji, is actually located on top of Mount Hieizan in Shiga prefecture. It is properly credited however as one of the most important monasteries in Japanese history as well as being the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders the Pure Land (Jodo), Zen and Nichiren sects.
Enryakuji Temple was initially founded in 788 by Saicho, the monk who introduced Tendai Buddhism from China and features as many as 3,000 other temples. Enryakuji Temple is also famous for its past army of warrior monks (僧兵 sōhei) who often engaged in power struggles with other monasteries and political leaders in Kyoto, as a counterbalance to power hungry individuals.
Note : Enryakuji Tem main hall is undergoing some renovation and will be covered by scaffolding until at least 2026.

Located deep in the Arashiyama district northwest of Kyoto, Giou-ji Temple (Giouji / Gioji) is a quiet temple surrounded by trees and a luxuriant moss garden. The temple is named after Gio a Shirabyoshi in Kyoto a female Japanese traditional dancer who lived during the Heian Period.
The story goes that Gio fell in love with the Heike Clan's powerful leader Taira-no-Kiyomori and asked him to help the villagers of her hometown of Yasu. He built a water channel known today as Gioi-gawa. Unfortunately for Gio, Taira-no-Kiyomori grew tired of Gio and his affection changed to another Shirabyoshi dancer: Hotoke-gozen (1160-1180).
Sad, Gio retreated to this temple to spend the rest of her life as a Buddhist priestess, along with her sister, mother, and another of Kiyomori's spurned lovers.

The Icho Namiki Avenue in Gaienmae is a rather typical large avenue in Tokyo all year long with the exception of few weeks a year (Mid November ! Mid December) when all the ginkgo trees lined up on each side the avenue turn to gold. This turns a rather banal place into a magical and romantic avenue that is definitely worth checking if you are visiting Japan this time of year!

Ondagawa is a small river that flows through Machida City, a suburb in southwest Tokyo. Unassuming all year long, Ondagawa is, however, during Sakura season, one of the most beautiful secret sakura spots in Tokyo that you definitely have to check thanks to its 400 plus cherry trees planted along the Ondagawa river bank.

Founded in the 7th century, Zenkō-ji (Zenko-ji) Temple is actually one of the most important and popular temples in Japan, and stores the first ever Buddhist statue bought in Japan when Buddhism was first introduced during the 6th century.
Zenkō-ji’s fame does not stop here, since the temple itself was founded before Buddhism in Japan split into different sects, and as such, Zenkō-ji currently belongs to both the Tendai and Jōdoshū schools of Buddhism. It is co-managed by twenty-five priests from the former school, and fourteen from the latter.
Finally, and unlike many other cities in Japan, Zenkō-ji is at the center of the birth of Nagano City as the city itself was built around the temple.

There are hundreds of types of traditional dances in Japan, and Awa Odori is one of the best-known ones. Originated in Tokushima, it is now enjoyed and danced hundreds of thousands of performers across Japan.
Among those, the Awa Odori Festival in Koenji, Tokyo is the biggest with over 60 years of history. It now attracts ten thousand performers and a million people to view the festival held there on the last weekend of August every year.
“Dancing Fools” is the word to describe Awa Odori dancers, and “watching fools” is for the viewers. Being watching fools is not only fun but also gives energy to the dancers. They are an inevitable part of making up this festival, and I would like to give some basic knowledge to have these precious partners enjoy Awa Odori more, and make this summer a special one.

Erected on top of Gujō Hachiman’s nearest hill, the Gujō Hachiman Castle was built in 1559 by a local feudal lord. Destroyed during the Meiji Period, the castle was only rebuilt in 1933. Unfortunately it was not rebuilt as the original, but the Gujō Hachiman Castle comes with a wooden foundation rather that the usual concrete ones often used when rebuilding such monuments.
Offering an amazing view of the Gujō Hachiman village and valleys below, Gujō Hachiman Castle is best visited during the autumn when the leaves change color.
