2. STILL PHOTOGRAPH OF GUNMAN (IN GREY) RUNNING AS SUITED MAN TACKLES HIM
STORY: Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, died on Friday (July 8) hours after he was shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, shocking a country in which political violence is rare and guns are tightly controlled.
The Asahi Shimbun newspaper published a photograph of Abe lying face-up on the street with blood on his white shirt as a crowd surrounded him.
Abe was making a campaign speech outside a train station when two shots rang out. Security officials were then seen tackling a man in a grey T-shirt and beige trousers in a second photograph.
Doctors were unable to revive Abe, who was taken to hospital in cardiopulmonary arrest and showing no vital signs. He was declared dead at 5:03 p.m. (0803 GMT), about five and a half hours after being shot. Police said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting had been arrested.

10. OFFICIALS DISMANTLING TABLE USED DURING BALLOT COUNTING
STORY: Sri Lankan lawmakers voted acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new president on Wednesday (July 20), hoping he would pull the country out of a crippling economic and political crisis.
"Ranil Wickremesing has been duly elected by parliament by a simple majority as the eighth executive president of the of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka," Dhammika Dasanayake, the secretary general of parliament said after counting finished.
The win for Wickremesinghe, opposed by many ordinary Sri Lankans, could lead to more demonstrations by people furious with the ruling elite after months of severe shortages of fuel, food and medicines, several protesters have said.
"What the people are asking of us is not the old politics. the parliament must unite in the face of these issues," the 73-year-old said after his victory.
The other main candidate, ruling party lawmaker Dullas Alahapperuma, was more acceptable to the protesters and the opposition but did not have any top-level governance experience in a country with barely any dollars for imports and desperately in need of an IMF bailout. The 225-member parliament gave 134 votes to Wickremesinghe and 82 to Alahapperuma. A third candidate, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, got just three votes.

STORY: Taipei residents on Tuesday (August 2) were divided over a possible visit by United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, amid intensifying warnings from China.
Pelosi, a long-time China critic, was expected to arrive in Taipei later on Tuesday, people briefed on the matter said, as the United States said it would not be intimidated by Chinese "saber rattling" over the visit.
While university student Yang Hsing-ruei believed the visit would help the Taiwan-U.S. relationship improve, his fellow classmate, Chang Yun-fan, thought it won't bring "any real benefit".
"In the end we are just a chess piece in someone else’s game. It is very hard for Taiwan to walk its own path," said 22-year-old Chang.
One person familiar with Pelosi's itinerary said most of her planned meetings, including that with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, were scheduled for Wednesday (August 3).
Pelosi was visiting Malaysia on Tuesday, having begun her Asia tour in Singapore on Monday (August 1). Her office said she will also go to South Korea and Japan, but made no mention of a Taiwan visit.
