Ep. 5586 - Peter Van Buren: There Will Be Another Afghanistan - 8/27/21
Scott talks with Peter Van Buren about the situation in Afghanistan. Van Buren explains that many of the people tasked with working on the Afghanistan War were, in fact, working to cover up their own role in the war. And that these individual failures played off each other to create one massive failure. On top of that, Van Buren argues that policymakers were entirely removed from the costs of the war. And because of that, Van Buren predicts we will soon find ourselves in a similar conflict.
Jon Basil Utley, director of Americans Against World Empire, discusses the "national defense" exception from popular outrage against government waste, conservatives who think government isn't competent to run a nursery school but is up to running a world empire, why warfare and welfare go hand in hand, the coming VAT that will aid in prolonging the U.S. empire and why the conservative movement is all out of good ideas.

Robert Stinnett, author of Day of Deceit: The Truth about FDR and Pearl Harbor, discusses how he found the McCollum memo outlining the FDR administration’s eight step plan to provoke a Japanese attack while searching through the National Archives; the radio listening stations that intercepted the Japanese fleet’s coded transmissions, earlier decrypted by the US; official orders from Naval command to stand aside and let the attack happen; and Stinnett’s new work-in-progress book, dealing in part with whether Admiral Kimmel’s was complicit or framed-up.

Josh Ruebner, National Advocacy Director of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, discusses burning his Israeli military deferment papers in protest, reasons to be skeptical of the newest attempt at Israel-Palestinian peace talks, the unfair foundation for negotiations that requires equal concessions from drastically unequal partners, why the U.S. never uses its substantial leverage to influence Israel's policy and how the 500,000 West Bank settlers may have established enough "facts on the ground" to make a 2-state solution impossible.

Journalist Michael Hastings, winner of the George Polk Award for his article “The Runaway General” in Rolling Stone magazine, discusses how the Afghan War is killing US soldiers’ morale, since they believe (rightly) that it’s a useless effort; the “surge” that failed to produce any measurable progress, politically or militarily; Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s “gaffe” on leaving 70 thousand troops in Afghanistan through 2014; why official announcements on troop numbers are less important than the White House’s resolve on keeping the military’s independent policy-making in check; the fine line between the US fighting a war inside Pakistan (with the government’s begrudging acceptance) and fighting a war against Pakistan; and why the price of a continued US presence in Iraq may be renewed violence from Moqtada al Sadr’s forces.

Gareth Porter, independent historian and journalist for Inter Press Service, discusses the new developments in the "smoking laptop" story and the strongest evidence yet that Israeli intelligence, using the MEK as a front, created the laptop forgery to frame Iran for pursuing nuclear weapons.

Gareth Porter rejoins the show for an update on the Russian election hacking allegations. He reviews the evidence as presented by various media outlets and intelligence agencies, explaining why each story doesn’t amount to much of anything on its own, and thus we shouldn’t conclude, simply because there are a lot of different stories, that there’s something to the overall narrative of Russian meddling. If anything, in fact, it’s the intelligence community itself that is trying to call the 2016 election results into question.
Gareth Porter is an investigative historian and journalist on the national security state, and author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare. Follow him on Twitter @GarethPorter and listen to Gareth’s previous appearances on the Scott Horton Show.

Daniel Davis talks to Scott about the possibility of war with China. Davis fears that despite what would seem to be common sense arguments against ever fighting such a war, that’s the direction that the American military establishment is heading in. The war planners in Washington seem to think that even though the U.S. and China both have large nuclear arsenals, we could fight a conventional war without either side resorting to nukes. This is the height of foolishness, says Davis, but even if we did somehow avoid nuclear war, China could probably defeat the United States easily using only conventional weapons, if we tried to come to them on their turf. We must find a way to disentangle ourselves from distant conflicts in which we have no interest, like the dispute between China and Taiwan, before it’s too late to turn back.

Asia Times columnist Pepe Escobar discusses the Mideast uprisings in terms of rebellion against neoliberal economic policy; Saudi Arabia’s crackdown on Bahrain protesters and steadfast support for the minority Sunni monarchy; why Turkey stands to win considerably more regional influence than does Iran, following successful revolutions; the hypocrisy of US foreign policy laid bare; why it’s time to end the empire and put the money to a more constructive use, as the US has lost the “beacon of democracy” role anyhow; the unavailability of Al Jazeera on American television broadcasts; and how Central Asia’s pipeline politics may change political realities but not the availability of oil in the marketplace.
