DIY Whole Home Backup Generator XP12000EH Natural Gas Conversion with Central Air
WARNING: This is not an "approved, legal" method as it requires you to use what's between your two ears to not screw it up and cause serious damage, injury, DEATH and of course legal liability.
I am not a licensed electrician, plumber, or contractor. I am just a savvy homeowner who wants to show you how I did my DIY projects.
It is recommended that you follow all legal and local guidelines for any project.
Anything you do is at your own risk and is your sole responsibility.

One last BIG thing,

NEVER RUN THE GENERATOR WITH BOTH THE MAINS BREAKER AND GENERATOR INPUT BREAKER IN THE ON POSITION AT THE SAME TIME.

Today I will be taking you over the completed install for my whole home backup generator.

I took a dual fuel Duromax XP12000EH generator and converted it to natural gas with a Nash Fuel tri-fuel kit to enable it to run off of gasoline, propane, and natural gas.

I ran 8/3 romex from a new 50A 2 pole breaker in the breaker box to a 50A dryer recepticle.

I ran the same 8/3 romex outside, through conduit, in ground to the generator with a 50A dryer plug on both ends. I sealed the outside end with RTV silicone.

For the gas, I went full my 1/2" natural gas stub out, originally meant for a gas grill, but now is teed off to feed my grill, fire pit (also converted from propane) and now the generator.

I ran flexible 1/2" CSST hose from the new tee and valve to the generator, attaching it to the house and then going underground in the same trench as the power wire.

This got everything running fine, except for the air conditioner.

To remedy this, I bought a 5-2-1 air conditioner hard start kit. This reduces the start up load by about half. After installing the hard start kit, everything started up and ran fine.

The whole project cost me roughly $2,000, which is a fraction of how much you can buy a typical home backup generator setup. Sure it doesn't have auto transfer, but for the cost, I'll run out to start it and flip 2 breakers.

There's also a reducer needed to go from the regulator out to the carburetor in, but I forget if it's a 1/2" to 3/8" or 3/8" to 1/4" flare.
