***"Garbage"*** is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. The band's lineup - consisting of Scottish singer and musician ***[Shirley Manson](https://cutt.ly/1bBcrip)*** (vocals) and American musicians ***[Duke Erikson](https://cutt.ly/gbBcyPD)*** (guitar, bass, keyboards), ***[Steve Marker](https://cutt.ly/FbBcoiN)*** (guitar, keyboards), and ***[Butch Vig](https://cutt.ly/NbBxPnj)*** (drums, production) - has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved in songwriting and production.
A native of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Vig learned to play piano as a child and drums as a teenager. After leaving college, he met future bandmate Erikson in the band ***"[Spooner](https://cutt.ly/NbBxPnj)"***.
But the ***"Garbage"*** become ***"Garbage"*** when band's door opens for Manson, who kicked off her music career at a young age, joining rock band ***"[Goodbye Mr. MacKenzie](https://cutt.ly/YbBcc7E)"***, and alt-rock foursome ***"[Angelfish](https://cutt.ly/2bBcQTI)"***. After a couple auditions, she formally joined ***"Garbage"*** as their lead singer in August 1994.
Although it was released halfway through the first decade of the 21st century, ***BLM*** belongs to the midpoint of the last decade of the 20th century, sounding like a virtual Cliff Notes of the sounds, themes, and styles of the post-grunge '90s.
Since the band's drummer and chief sonic architect, Butch Vig, helped create that sound with the albums he produced for ***”Nirvana”***, the ***”Smashing Pumpkins”***, ***“Sonic Youth”***, and ***“L7”***, that's not a surprise, nor is it necessarily a disappointment.
It's an enjoyable record, but it's hard to escape the nagging feeling that Garbage has painted itself into a corner: they haven't found a way to expand their sound, to make it richer or mature - they can only deliver more of the same. ***”Pixies”*** are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in **Boston, Massachusetts**. Until 2013, the band comprised ***[Black Francis](https://cutt.ly/xng3x37)*** (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), ***[Joey Santiago](https://cutt.ly/Jng3zxi)*** (lead guitar), ***[Kim Deal](https://cutt.ly/nng3b1L)*** (bass, backing vocals) and ***[David Lovering](https://cutt.ly/hng3Wy6)*** (drums).
The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, Pixies hired ***[Kim Shattuck](https://cutt.ly/Qng3OIr)*** as a touring bassist; she was replaced the same year by ***[Paz Lenchantin](https://cutt.ly/6ng3SPH)***, who became a permanent member in 2016.
Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies, and evocative, cryptic lyrics, ***"Pixies"*** are one of alternative rock's most influential bands.
They turned conventions inside-out, melding punk and indie guitar rock, classic pop, surf rock, and stadium-sized riffs with bizarre, fragmented lyrics about space, religion, sex, mutilation, and pop culture. No matter how much lyrics may have been impenetrable, the music was direct, forceful, and laid the groundwork for the alternative explosion of the early '90s.
***”Head Carrier”*** is the band’s sixth studio album, released on September 30, 2016 on ***”Pixiesmusic”*** and ***”[PIAS](https://cutt.ly/DnkqIva)”***. Produced by ***[Tom Dalgety](https://cutt.ly/vnkqDnZ)***, and recorded at ***”[RAK Studios](https://cutt.ly/1nkqKcA)”*** in London, the album is the first to feature former ***”A Perfect Circle”*** and ***”Zwan”*** bass guitarist ***Paz Lenchantin***, who joined the band in 2014 to tour in support of its previous album, ***”Indie Cindy”***.

However, the niceness turns strange on ***"[All I Think About Now](https://cutt.ly/5nlqJOi)"***. A musical thank-you note to Deal written by Black Francis and sung by Lenchantin that shamelessly borrows from ***"[Where Is My Mind?](https://cutt.ly/pnlqXBF)"***, it manages to be both jarring and overly nostalgic.
But still, there is Indiecindyc feel that everything on the new release sounds like it could come from Frank Black's 177th solo album, that they still occasionally shine and reminds of how great this band once were. It's a meaby little bit of a matter of taste, but mostly a matter of wrong expectations?
While it feels like ***”Pixies”*** are still figuring out how to continue their legacy, ***”Head Carrier's”*** best moments suggest they're heading in the right direction.

***"Stereolab"*** are an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990.
Led by the songwriting team of ***[Tim Gane](https://cutt.ly/BmFnRwl)*** (guitar and keyboards) and ***[Lætitia Sadie](https://cutt.ly/dmFnYuG)r***(vocals, keyboards and guitar), the group's music combines influences from *krautrock*, *lounge* and *1960s pop music*, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French.
Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the ***[Surrealist](https://cutt.ly/imFnOlx)*** and ***[Situationist](https://cutt.ly/ymFnAt5)*** movements.
Although ***"Stereolab"*** found success in the underground music scene and were influential enough to spark a renewed interest in older analogue instruments, they have never had a significant commercial impact. Meaby the key is lost in the interview where ***Gane*** and ***Sadier*** have discussed their musical philosophy - *"to be unique for us was more important than to be good"*.
The compilation ***"Oscillons from the Anti-Sun"*** is not part of ***”Stereolab”*** ongoing ***”[Switched On](https://cutt.ly/3m9ifx0)”*** series, which rounds up the stray singles, EPs, and B-sides, but it's easy to see how the casual observer might think it's the fourth installment in the series. Instead, this 35-track box set contains material previously released on British and European CD singles and EPs between 1993 and 2000.
Frustratingly, the EPs are neither presented in their original running order, nor is the music presented chronologically. Instead, the three discs jump around from EP to single, from year to year, without regard to the band's ever-shifting lineups.
Despite this, the sequencing of the music flows well, and it's an entertaining listen since this indeed covers the group's peak years.
