lost, no gas or money, typical day in my motorcycle life
just a typical day in the life of a lone gringo on a motorcycle trying to see how far he can ride before he quits.
Welcome to my journey from California to Patagonia on my 2014 NE KLR650.

This was a struggle...leaks, leaks, leaks. Eventually, I figured it out. But the start and middle were a real struggle.

I spent an hour in a Home Depot PVC isle fitting pieces together that would fit the bottom of the sink and feed down to a 1/2" barb for the tubing.
I got the bungee cord from my local hardware store.

Share this around with friends / ex's you never texted back so we can do another 10,000 miles of awesome videos and amazing drone shots!!

If you had told me a year ago that I would be driving around America with this kick-ass van (and a kick-ass Mavic drone!)...actually, I might have laughed and believed you. I'm crazy like that.
The POINT is wow! Thousands of miles already and thousands more to come :)
I wanted to put together a beautiful, calm glimpse into the life I've been living on the road. Also, this seems like something useful to play at my funeral. Can you blame a guy for planning ahead?
All of this footage was shot with a Mavic II Pro (https://amzn.to/374a0Sb) by my own two (often cold) hands.

"One day I just decided that having that money and that house wasn't making me happy and that something less than that would." Kolbie traded her jeep in for a van and her future career as a PTA for work that she loves.
"My heart was not in it at all. It just sounded so good to tell other people that that is what I was doing." Kolbie had to learn how she would deal with the incredulous feedback from those around her when she gave up her opportunity with a good PTA program to chase the dream of doing work she loves. She is now running her own stand up paddle board yoga business while living out of her van.
"I don't have that job security that is preached to a lot of us growing up; to go to college and get a career. On the occasion, I'll have those moments where I think I threw everything away. But then I remember that those are just other peoples' voices in my head."
The third episode in the series, People Who Wander, brings us to Fredericksburg, Virginia to talk with Kolbie about hard choices, disappointing the people she loves, facing fears, and what has led to her living an unglamorously and beautifully happy life doing work she loves rather than building a traditional career.
Kolbie is always a bright light on her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kolbierosser/

Why do people choose to go out into the world and wander?
Why do they seek out adventure and discomfort?
Why do they make compromises in their lives in order to travel, explore, and push themselves?
These are the questions this series, People Who Wander, revolves around. I am traveling full time, creating videos about things that matter while seeking out stories worth telling.

Today I went on the search for the beautiful monarch butterflies that this area of Mexico is famous for hosting on their migratory trip. Although it was late in the season, I am still glad I made the trek and got to see some of the little buggers for myself in my lifetime.
Welcome to my journey from California to Patagonia on my 2014 NE KLR650.

Did you know, if you arrive at a national park or seashore after hours you do not pay an admittance fee! Padre National Seashore is absolutely beautiful. The drive in around 10pm was just 15 miles of fog rolling over grassy dunes and wind-blown sand.
There were a handful of van dwellers and RV's in the parking lot when I arrived. The next morning, my run on the beach and shower in the beach showers next to the parking lot (AMEN) were the perfect way to start the day.
I also had my first run-in with bioluminescent algae! I had no idea we had that in Texas! Apparently, we do. Finding it all over the beach and seeing it light up when bothered (friction) was trippy!
Pro tip: Don't park your van down wind of the dumpsters / outhouse. You'll wake up to the smell of those things blowing through your van.

Walmart parking lot workout sessions? That's just regular at this point. I had to get used to people gawking real quick if I wanted to stay active living out of this van. Whether it's Walmart parking lots, campgrounds, or beaches people always do the double-take-stare when you're working out next to a big white van with only half your clothes on. Who'd have thought?
Huge thank you to the unnamed subscriber who had the kindness and initiative to support the channel by putting on that little raffle! I appreciate you.
There was not much good snow at A-Basin so I ended up finding a short hike and traverse on the backside of the mountain near The Beavers that was worth repeating until my body couldn't handle the hike again!
Cooking dinner in the van at the base of the mountain with the heater on and a fresh change of clothes waiting...wow, skiing has never been this good.
///
This quiet little Walmart in the mountains (https://goo.gl/maps/Rn3feLN8j4eXWQot8) is where I normally stay when I want to ski at Winter Park Resort the following day.
The gorgeous hike that I edited to that beautiful, peaceful piano music (https://goo.gl/maps/kUrMQupcw2xEC3xx9).
There is also a Walmart (https://goo.gl/maps/1x9N6eTVTcfRpL8CA) in that town (Frisco) which is a great launching point for a whole bunch of Colorado adventures. It's between Keystone, A-Basin, Copper Mountain, and Breckinridge.
Arapahoe Basin Resort (A-Basin) stays open longer than most ski resorts due to its insane elevation so I will be back later in the ski season!
The little hike with the views I did after skiing (https://goo.gl/maps/8DmLiGpsqKhVBJ4B9).

For those hot, hot nights when sleeping in the van is especially *fun* we have this awesome wall fan to save the day!
Read the walkthru here: https://www.storiesfromtheroad.life/vanbuild/sirocco-ii-elite-low-power-usage-wall-fan-for-van-life
The Sirocco II (Elite) is a common choice for marine applications. In the van world, marine-grade things are often the best option given the rugged nature of a van's life as well as the limited power supply and the consequent need for efficiency. The fan pulls about 1-2 watts at each speed which is so impressive..
I went with the Caframo Sirocco II Elite (white) fan (https://tinyurl.com/y2llvjjn) for the doubled warranty length (2 years for the non-elite model, 4 for the elite model) as well as the longer life expectancy for the more expensive model.
Other people also go with the standard model which looks great as well: https://amzn.to/3kYkQxs
I used end cap connectors to hardwire the fan into my van's wiring: https://amzn.to/33g9fmu
The DC 10AWG wiring in my van I connected the fan to: https://amzn.to/2DO7kwJ
Electrical tape to seal the connection: https://amzn.to/2FhS5Nh
Wood screws I used for mounting the plate to the wall: https://amzn.to/34hzo6s
The fuse block I am using: https://amzn.to/2RogfIx
ATO blade fuses for the fuse block: https://amzn.to/3m7ybVO

That's one happy van lifer right there. I cannot encourage you strongly enough to make plans to experience highway one south of Santa Cruz on a weekday around Golden Hour on into sunset.
It stuns me every time just how magnificently vast the experience is. A true soul-filling moment in your life.
///
Davenport Pier is a great little stop whether you have a hammock or not! The big gravel parking lot next to the road (https://goo.gl/maps/QJtGuGQfgH9MqN3i9) is a great place to park for the night with LTE service, a little town nearby, 15-minutes north of Santa Cruz and almost always another van lifer or two for good parking lot company.
Asilomar State Beach (https://goo.gl/maps/wTxpJa8ZNmJwmsrK9) is wonderful during the week (it's way too crowded on weekends).
There is no single stretch or stopping point along Highway One I'd suggest above any other. The key to the purest and most perfect experience is to start just south of Santa Cruz (Asilomar State Beach is where I started) before Golden Hour (maybe by an hour or so) and to drive without plans or intentions beyond meandering high above the coastline and to do so on a WEEKDAY. Come the weekend...all of California and every tourist take their Tesla and Mustang rentals to clog up the two-lane cliffside road.
I tried out sleeping in an Amtrak parking lot (https://goo.gl/maps/ZU2RnBajxTwTGUhS6)! ha! There were no signs about overnight sleeping...so I suppose it may just be an ok spot!
