"for Freedom," a piece for solo violin, was commissioned in early 2022 by violinist Marie-Claire Cardinal for her graduating recital at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where she premiered it on May 2, 2022. This recording was made on August 24, 2022, in the Église de Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly, a historic 18th-century church on the bank of the St. Lawrence River in Québec, Canada. It has been cried in celebration and in protest; it has been scorned as a euphemism for selfishness; it has become a weapon of rhetoric bent to fit the hand of the highest bidder. Although it may mean something different to everyone, millions have crossed the globe to seek it, and still do; millions have died for its sake; nations were formed on its promise. It is for this reason that freedom must never become an epithet; that it must not come with strings attached besides the love with which we enjoy it so that our neighbours may enjoy the same; that freedom must be celebrated and honoured for freedom's sake. "for Freedom" was written as an illustration of the pursuit of freedom. Through the transformation of its opening gesture—a melody rising into silence, like a lonely cry—it explores the pain of longing, confronts fear and despair, and at last, through hope, overcomes the shadow laid upon it. It is a musical offering for all those who strive for freedom. *** Le mot liberté a pris une importance significative au cours des deux dernières années.
