We have been given the gift of perspective, exposure to multiple ways of living, so that we can derive our own identities and design our own lifestyles (granted, we have the courage to do so). I belong to the South Asian community because I was born into it. Equally so, I belong to the Canadian community because I grew up surrounded by it. For that reason, western culture (ie. ‘white people’ culture) is just as much a part of me as brown culture is. As an increasingly multicultural society, we need to stop perceiving reality from a binary lens. No culture is singularly “good”, and no culture is singularly “bad”. There are both positive and negative aspects within each. In my life, I am constantly reflecting on what ideologies are fed to me, and judging them based on whether they add value to my experience on this earth, or not. Through this practice, I have learned to embrace the constructive and do away with the destructive. There is nothing wrong with picking and choosing what you identify with, or who you identify with- even when it goes against what other people want you to be. We label ourselves and others with words that describe our identities because it helps us simplify our perception of who we are. However, there are parts of you that can exist outside of the boxes your labels have placed you in. You are a unique individual, and you are free to exist in whatever space you choose.
