Foraging for Food - Medlars (Mespilus germanica). La nèfle, ancienne, oubliée et souvent gratuite.
An ancient and largely forgotten fruit tree, originally brought to Europe from Persia and now growing wild in hedgerows. Medlars are a valuable addition to any Winter store, they can be eaten raw or preserved and made into a variety of savoury and sweet foodstuffs. In Northern Iran the fruit, leaves and bark are used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments and diseases and is currently under study for its potential antioxidant and antiradical properties.

I'd like to share some of the rare breeds inhabiting my family's woodland smallholding on the Highland Boundary Fault. In Part 2, meet Daisy and Marilyn, the Shetland cows. Small of stature, hardy, agile, friendly and long-lived, the Sheltland spent centuries enclosed only within the bounds of its Island home. Originally the cow was a pied red but in the 1950s the prevalent colour was black and white and recently there has been a return of the old colours:- brindle, grey and dun. Brought to near extinction by World Wars and various wartime edicts, there were only 40 left by 1950. However, the Shetland, as a great forager, producing quality milk and calves into its late teens, is experiencing a Renaissance as the ideal smallholder/homestead cow.

Después de haber pasado las vacaciones de Navidad con mi familia en Escocia, me gustaría compartir con ustedes algunas de las especies raras que habitan en sus parcela de bosque en la Falla de Fronteras Highland.
En la segunda parte, saludar y Marilyn Daisy, vacas Shetland. De tamaño pequeño, robusto, ágil, amable y que tiene una larga vida la Shetland pasó siglos encerrados dentro de los límites de su isla natal. Originalmente una vaca de color rojo y blanca, pero en la década de 1950, el color dominante era blanco y negro. Recientemente ha habido un retorno de los viejos colores: - atigrado, gris. trigo. How to keep seeds and cuttings warm at night. When you open your Hen house door in the morning you can't fail to miss the amount of heat generated by your flock overnight. Now you can put that heat to use. Preliminary tests give me an increase of 2 degrees Celsius per two quail. I now intend to go on to test two bantam broodies and also a combination of quail and broody.

Le matin, quand vous ouvrez la porte du poulailler, vous ne pouvez pas ne pas ignorer la quantité de chaleur générée par vos poules pendant la nuit. Maintenant vous pouvez utiliser cette chaleur. Des tests préliminaires de me donner une augmentation de 2 degrés Celsius par deux cailles. J'ai maintenant l'intention de tester deux poules naines couveuse et aussi une combinaison d'une poule naine couveuse et deux cailles.

Raising chickens in a wild garden/forest garden environment, in my experience returns hens and roosters/cockerels to their natural behaviours, including weaving intricate nests. Both male and female (in some breeds such as the Polish it is mainly the male) make intricate nests, including materials such as moss, twigs, leaves and their own feathers. Here I am sharing a typical and beautiful nest I often find in our garden. This time though it's not just eggs. The chicks are still a bit too noisy to remain on the ground and need to learn that in Normandie there can still be night predators!

En mi experiencia, criar pollos en un entorno de jardín salvaje / jardín forestal devuelve a las gallinas y gallos a sus comportamientos naturales, incluido el tejido de nidos intrincados.
