1201 . Paul Murphy - 'Your Hand In Mine' (electric version 1) - eulogy to and for y children
A tentative first electric run-through of this new song. Slightly flat in places, but not surprising - believe it or not, this came at the end of belting out 5 punk-rawk takes of 'Who Do You Think You Are' (videos 1205-1209), and I was singing in Braille.
Nonetheless, I think the melody of the song comes through still, almost lullaby-ish, which is apt - this song came from a beautiful rememberance of my baby daughter clutching my finger in her new-born hand.
This is from a second, safety camera that was running, rather too far out for a good sound balance. If you'll believe me, it sounded great in the room!

A somewhat lost song - not in my live set more than a few times at most, never recorded. I rediscovered the lyric and worked on it for a day or two, this being the second of the 8 takes recorded over that time.
The title looks to me like this song was an 'addendum' to Bob Geldof - where I grew up, there were enough horrors literally right outside our window. Spray-painted on our house walls, too.

Way back in history, this was one of the numbers I used to play to lead into a set break. It's a 'band' song, musicians will know that feeling, one you can all lean back and let the instruments take over on, and room for a solo for everyone. Works pretty well on your own as well.
This is a'Vault' video, probably dating from late October or early November 2023.
The title, by the way, I have been asked a million times about and I truly do not know. My only guess is that I used to have a large picture of Darryl Hannah, from the movie "Splash", on the wall there (my son's photo now resides there), and, given my lifelong propensity for not having titles for my songs, I assume I just looked up and saw it and named the song after her character in that film. Or maybe I just saw a man with a hat on...

My beautiful daughter's wonderful poem. Believe it or not, and I only found this out recently, when Emily handed her poem in at school - it was a project on space, and Em, always innovative, decided to do hers as a poem - her teacher "threw it in the bin."
There's the UK education system for you.
I realise I am not an independent observer, but 23 versions on YT, Rumble and Odysee, with several thousand views and many positive comments, indicate that the great public have more discerning taste than the robots of apathy.

New song. Title inspired by a superb song called 'Shout Above The Rain', you can (and really should) find it here: @someguywithaguitar.
This wa/is a video made for my children, who have heard me play my songs many a time, and have read them, in my lyric books or, if it a song for them, it normally starts in a text to them; but it occurred to me they had no idea WHERE the songs come from. As I get asked the question quite a lot (not a complaint, I take it as a compliment even after all these years), I thought I would put this video public instead of in my private channel.
This is pretty much how it has happened for 60 % of the 40 years I have been writing songs for now. A subject, an opening line, a phrase - in this case the aforementioned one, which has been carouselling around my mind since I first heard it; grab pen and paper; out come words; apologise to wife for ruining honeymoon night "but songs only come once, darling"... er, where was I, oh yes. Normally by line 2 the music has introduced itself to me, or more important, the cadence.
Then, as soon as the words are finished, if possible, I always try to quickly grab a guitar, or sit at a piano, and join the two together, bang out a few versions to make it sit in the memory banks. Then I apologise to everyone for ruining grandma's funeral... er, where was I?
Anyway, what you see here is normally what occurs. Most times it's not a case of making the songs arrive, but making them stop ('Prairie Winds' - 11,500 words, anyone?). In my head, this has another 5 verses, which have come to me since 'finishing' the song, but time is against me (closing lines I wanted to be, "The wind is wiping away your goodbye footprints/While I'm crying louder than the rain", kind of brings it full circle to the central metaphor).
As an aside, I guess maybe another 30% of my songs come from composing live, I'm either at the piano, or have a guitar on, hit a chord, and let the words come out. The first 5 chapter of 'Prairie Winds' being, I think, the most recent example. Last time I'll be booked to play 'Happy Birthday' at a 6-year-old's party...

Hello, thank you for your interest in this video. This is the full version of 'While A Bridge Is Burning', and the second of 2 takes recorded today. This is the first time I have played the complete song in 24 years (the session - stricly speaking this video is the furst time I have played the song in 5 minutes), and this is the 'standard; speed, the way I played it live. The preceding take, video 1921, is a unique slow version.
I wrote this way down the beaten track of my life, in 1986, coming off the back of homelessness, the first Mrs T governement ("I pity the fool who votes for me"), and a divorce (of sorts). All that is in here, chronicled in an allegorical way (the "hunters... return to other lands" lines, for instance, refer to the Police behaviour during the miner's strike). As well as a lot more.
This is from camera 1, with balanced sound. The camera 2 footage - video 1922b - the camera is set up to record the room sound, as a 'field recording' (I guess I should say why, after all these hundreds of videos - the answer is, simply, because that's how it sounded to me in my ears when I started out, busking. Here, it is how I sounded in a live venue - ish).
