So, the 10th of 13 Republican Debates has come and gone. This one was – by far – the most out-of-control shouting match as two junior senators desperately fought with the new giant of American politics for their political lives.
Political lives? Yes! Neither one will win. Both have reached the zenith of their political careers. Both probably could not be reelected to the U.S. Senate in their home states.
Example – Rubio – Mr. Trump, 38 years ago you hired some illegals to build one of your buildings….
Everyone at my house looked puzzled as we tried to calculate back to what we were doing 38 years ago - 1978. I mean I have trouble remembering what I ate for dinner 2 days ago.
Trump was exactly 31 years old and Jimmy Carter had been President for only one year. Bill Clinton didn’t become Governor of Arkansas until the following year 1979, and Rubio was 7 years old!
No, there should be some statute of limitations for presidential candidate sins – like maybe 12 years unless it involved a felony conviction and 20 years unless it involved murder, treason or rape.
Anyway, none of the yelling attacks last night helped Rubio or Cruz – both suffered in the polls, and Cruz completely crashed. Trump – as usual - only got stronger. So let’s go straight to the numbers.
Drudge poll – the biggest – as of 7am, of 308,000 votes cast:
Trump 59, Cruz 20, Rubio 15, Kasich 4, Carson 2.5.
Fox 5 San Diego – Trump 78, Rubio 13, Cruz 4, Kasich 3, Carson 2.
Slate – Trump 75, Rubio 13, Kasich and interestingly - Hillary Clinton - tied with 4, Cruz 2, Carson 1.
The Time magazine poll – 45,000 votes by 7:10 am.
Trump 70, Rubio 19, Kasich 5, Cruz 4, Carson 2.
Even in Cruz’s home turf, Austin, Texas, the Statesman poll:
Trump 85, Rubio 8, Cruz 4! Wow, what can that mean for Tuesday’s Texas primary?
Even on poor old Glen Beck’s website – the Blaze – THE most pro-Cruz site imaginable:
Trump: 52, Cruz 26, Rubio 17
The Wall Street Journal:
Trump 78, Rubio 13, Cruz and Kasich tied at 4
Even the Brits got to join in. In the most interesting poll of the morning - the Telegraph poll - measured the positive votes for each candidate versus the negative votes, and the spreads are remarkable.
Trump was the only candidate in positive territory with +7400 votes.
Kasich came in second, but was still overall in minus territory with a minus 700 votes, with Dr. Ben Carson third at minus 900.
The attack dog styles of both Rubio and Cruz didn’t sit well with the British. Rubio scored a -2200, and Cruz dead last with a minus -3600.
This sort of voting was always a favorite with my father, who spent WW2 in England fixing radios from shot up B-17s.
He always believed that you should be able to vote either for or against each candidate.
So, Dad, here is the first indication that your favorite voting system may be taking hold.
Telegraph columnist Ruth Sherlock provided a grudging comment that sums up the reaction of the British press:
“Loathe though I am to say it, I have to call the debate tonight for Donald Trump. His opponents ganged up to try to take the front-runner down but, Mr Trump emerged undamaged. Through sheer ego, he proves himself impervious to attacks.”
I’m Still reporting from Washington. Good day.
