ℹ howto ~ Handcuffing Positions ~ There's more than you may realise, some less comfortable...
Most people think there is 1 position, palms together with the only difference being is it done in the front or at the back. There are more options available for handcuffing people depending on the threat the person poses.
The aim should be to make accessing the keyholes difficult or impossible if you have time and the ability, regardless of which method. The last position I demonstrate is a rear version of the front version already shown. The front version is more secure due to the keyholes being inaccessible by either hand. The rear version that I demonstrated was the opposite where the keyholes are accessible by my right hand, so do try to put the keyholes out of reach of a person.
These are the raw positions demonstrated, techniques for the process of handcuffing vary from haphazard "any which way you can get them on the person" to regimented, practiced specific tactics for various situations and threat levels. I cannot provide this information, I leave practicing these to you and your practice partner, where such training is needed.
Most uncomfortable for larger people are rear stack (any handcuffs) due to forcing the arms to go farther towards the rear center line and front palms together (rigid handcuffs) due to the way the wrists are restricted when you bring your hands closer to you.

These Alcyon 5031 Universal Joint Handcuffs have a special joint instead of a chain...
These are a really nice design. They have a single, special hinge that allows for an extremely good degree of movement, while not having a chain that can be broken by a special forces technique that can snap the handcuffs by using the chain and physics without needing any tools. This seems much more sturdy and less able to be manipulated.
The keyhole is facing a different direction than you would expect from Alcyon. There are also more teeth on this handcuff. The wrist size seems to be a normal size.
A very nice and unique pair of handcuffs.
*A pity that the double locking mechanism is unreliable with non-Alcyon keys in this model. One side will open with a "standard" handcuff key but the other side will not disengage the double lock. I suspect this to be a problem with all Alcyon's models with the Smith & Wesson double locking design. This is the second pair I have witnessed this on. I sent the others back but because the Alcyon keys technically work, I won't bother sending these back. I will either keep them or sell them. I have other pairs that use unique keys, so it wouldn't be the first time I only have 2 or 3 keys to fit something.

These are model TCH 810 hinged handcuffs from Total Control Handcuffs (TCH).
As I understand it, these are sometimes carried as an additional or backup set of handcuffs by police. They are more restrictive than the older style chain handcuffs but not as restrictive as rigid handcuffs. They have the usual 3 pawl bar system and push-pin double locking.
This is the standard size, so they can close to a smaller size and won't accommodate very very large people. Modern speedcuffs have the larger "superior" size. So I got these to have the comparison.
They have a very, incredibly strong, 3 bar hinge system. This provides, in my opinion, SO much more strength and mechanical security against brute-force escape attempts. There is a video of someone snapping a peerless hinged handcuff in half that he was cuffed to an interrogation table at the police station in the US. I do not think that would ever work with these TCH hinges.
They are very nice, a matt less reflective nickel finish. Older models of TCH tended to be very very shiny, but I have noticed as time has moved on, they seem to be doing everything in a matt, almost "Smith & Wesson" style nickel finish.
Very high quality. Though unfortunately in my case the brand stamping is not properly formed.

This is my entire handcuffs and leg irons collection at this point. The video is in 4K format, due to the fact that I have a new smartphone with a better camera. So I spent a couple days photographing all my collection fresh so that no handcuffs or leg irons feel left out, going forward ?. I cannot record video in 4K but my pictures are large enough that I can fit them into 4K format.

These are the Russian BRS-3 handcuffs in black. Apparently in Russian they are called БРС-Ш and are apparently in current use by police and other law enforcement in Russia.
These are really heavy duty handcuffs from Russia. They have great security features, a hinge to reduce freedom of movement but offer some comfort, double lock which can be activated by the push pin or by turning the key AND they unlock in a similar way that ASP does, where you keep turning in the same direction to both disengage the double lock and then keep turning to undo the single lock. They also have a ditch and peg system which grabs the handcuff arm when it is locked onto the wrist, so a strong person could not pull outwards to disengage the teeth, thus keeping them locked!
These are really cool and are relatively comfortable, actually. They are NOT a large wrist capacity, they are probably similar to what you'd expect from regular Smith & Wesson sizing. They do close pretty decently small though.
Being black, they are imbued with a tactical "These mean business!" look to them. I have heard that some serious air-soft people use these to add authenticity to their games. While the locking mechanism seems more complicated than a "normal" pair of handcuffs, whether you are into airsoft or not, the simplicity of a single direction turn to unlock them is a bonus.
Normal handcuff keys work well, including the #TOOOL ultimate handcuff key. You only get one key with them and it's a dumpy little key which I am not a fan of. The low height of the key makes it more difficult to use to unlock yourself.
Speaking of difficulty, when placed downwards onto the wrists with the keyholes facing the body, the keyholes are on the upper area of the cuff, making it probably almost impossible to use the key-balancing-on-finger technique to undo them. So you may have to experiment having them upside down where you press them on the wrist from the under-side of the wrist so that the single arm is on the top!
I am very very happy to have a pair of these in my collection.
Additional experience after making the video. The bracelets have a slight angle to them. So in a similar way as the Clejuso 13 are more comfortable when placed in a particular way up, these too also will provide a slightly more comfortable experience when placed on the wrists from one direction (wrists placed down and the bows swung over the top to close) vs pressed down onto the wrist as "normal" kind of thing. So you could experiment and figure out which is the best method of application for your goal.

These are a pair of HIATTS 2103 speedcuffs, but these have the rare MET POLICE stamping on them, which signifies they were issued to police forces in London.
These have 3 pawls, great bow alignment and are in amazingly good condition. I am thrilled to now have a MET POLICE pair of speedcuffs and the chain cuffs.
They also have the backloading feature and for whatever reason, this pair does not hardly rattle at all, compared to my other ex-police pair which has the serial ground off.
I am really happy to add these to my collection.

THE 3
the-3-security-levels-of-asp-handcuff
This is a video showing you the 3 colours of the ASP lock sets for their handcuffs. They are interchangeable so you can replace damaged or "out of service life" ones or upgrade the security of your existing handcuffs. It's a really nice design.
Yellow
This is the most basic, it has 1 pawl bar, similar to Smith & Wesson or Peerless. It has a basic level of security and generally the absolutely easiest to pick and shim.
Green
This is marketed as a European lock, but in my opinion this should BE the global baseline standard. It has 3 thinner pawl bars instead of one large one. This makes picking and shimming more difficult unless you have knowledge and makeshift tools that will engage all 3 levers (Pawls) at the same time. British police handcuffs have 3 pawl bars.
Blue
This is the HIGH SECURITY model and requires a special key. The key needed to open these has a split in it, which allows a blocking plate inside to pass through the gap in the key. If you insert a normal handcuff key it will NOT turn at all. You can modify a normal handcuff key using a file to add a slot but most people would not know about this and it makes it more secure. Also it makes picking them VERY hard. However these handcuffs can be easily shimmed if they are not double locked.
A side note about all the ASP lock sets for their handcuffs. The double lock is easy to disengage since it is right next to the open keyway. It is trivial to disengage. Plus, all ASP handcuffs can be shimmed exceptionally easily and flawlessly. So even though the Blue lock is high security, someone could use a paper clip to deactivate the double lock and then use their very normal and standard shim to open the handcuffs in an easier way than most other models.
Over all I do love ASP handcuffs and while they have some security shortcomings, handcuffs are TEMPORARY RESTRAINTS. People should not be left unattended while handcuffed both for safety reasons and security reasons.
These lock sets can be bought in the US from the handcuff warehouse or in Europe from Nordhandel.

This is an interesting pair of Yuil M-03-1 Transport Handcuffs, made in Korea. South Korea to be specific (not the crazy North Korea!) These are the connection ring version of the M-03 model. The purpose of the ring is to create a chain gang environment for prisoner transport so one chain can run through all the cuffs to link the prisoners together. Alternatively it can allow them to be connected to leg irons. However this steel ring can be pressed down when not needed to allow normal grip and application of the handcuffs.
The gap between the wrists is larger and it makes accessing the key holes more difficult. They have a 2 pawl system, though mainly normal keys are able to open the handcuffs.
An interesting aspect of these is they are actually chain link handcuffs, using one very elongated welded chain. The plastic is then bolted on afterwards to provide rigidity from twisting, thus becoming rigid handcuffs. Though if the keyholes are facing out, someone could use a screw driver to undo the screws (normal cross-head screws, nothing fancy) and they could remove the plastic and they would become chain link handcuffs with a larger one single link, which would let people have twisting capability. Over all they are good handcuffs and worthy of being in my collection. It would have been nice if they would have used more secure screws, instead of the regular Philips type. But I do like them. Handcuffs like these should ideally not be applied where the keyholes are facing the hands because they can fiddle with the locks as much as any screws too.

This is a case for Moulder and Skully. This is a genuine latest USA produced HIATT 2103 rigid "Speedcuffs" handcuffs. It has a very nice etched branding on the double strands. These are ex BRITISH police issue. Yes, an American handcuff used by UK police. However, it has British TCH style modern grips which are branded HIATT.
How is this possible? Is the US brand HIATT now offering TCH style grips? Were a bunch of American HIATT speedcuffs procured by a particular force in the UK for some reason (instead of buying TCH domestically) and they asked TCH to make them some grips with HIATT stamped on them instead of TCH? This is a mystery.
What I know, is that these were procured from one force in the UK and that they only had 4 of these available. They all are USA HIATT 2103 handcuffs (based on branding style and the fact HIATT no longer is a UK company) with the nice etched branding on the double strands and they all have HIATT branding on the TCH style grips.
The truth is out there...
I was not going to buy any more handcuffs, but with very limited quantity available, I had to get a pair asap.
If anyone in the US knows of any HIATT speedcuffs with this style of grips, please do let us all know in the comments below. Also if anyone from TCH or HIATT or handcuff museum comes across this and has any insight, please share with the rest of the class ?.
