Addiction is not a disease. It’s a way of life that somebody can get into and we’re here to help.
In the Life Process Program, our view about addiction is that it’s not a disease. It’s a way of life that somebody can get into and we’re here to help.
Jack Antonoff — musician, singer, songwriter, producer, musical collaborator of Taylor Swift and many other global stars, winner of eight Grammies, and intimate partner of some of the most beautiful and talented women in the world — is anxious, depressed and suffers from OCD, for all of which he is being treated and medicated.
How did that happen? It’s hard to say he was a traumatized child (although a younger sister did die when he was 18). Rather he had a privileged upbringing, a close relationship with an older sister, and was given the scope to develop both his musical talents and coping skills from an early age. His resulting resilience and performance abilities are self-evident.
Rather than seeing himself as resilient, however, Antonoff has joined a growing body of young people (he’s 39) who label themselves with a variety of mental conditions. Instead of representing a “stigma,” mental disorder labels seem to be almost a badge of honor for Americans now. With what result? Americans already lead the world in years lost due to mental disorders — and their rate is increasing.
Where does this story go? Where does it end?

On today's episode of Sundays With Stories, Dr. Peele talks about his decades-long effort to change the way our culture thinks about addiction-- and the reasons why it's nearly impossible to change our mind about addiction myths that pervade our society!
Dr. Peele and Zach Rhoads talk about how even two brilliant researchers and writers, David Brooks and Kurt Andersen, fall for the simplistic dichotomous thinking about addiction, DESPITE being some of the most brilliant minds of our time.
They also mention friends Dr. Sally Satel and Dr. Carl Hart, whose new book, "Drug Use For Grown-Ups" is in stores now.

For the next 8 weeks, Zach Rhoads will be talking about each of the eight LPP modules with the creator of the program, Dr. Stanton Peele.

In his liaisoning work outside of LPP, Stanton interacts with LPP curious potential clients. In doing so he learns how pervasive 12-step and trauma therapies are.
Yet some clients who are dissatisfied with their usefulness continue such futile, even offensive treatment for years. Stanton and Zach explore why they do so, often to their own detriment.

Zach and Stanton run low on time in their 2+ hour discussion, but manage to sneak in two important questions for today's Q & A.
TODAY'S QUESTIONS (abridged):
1. 00:14 --- "I WANT to agree with your take on "addiction vs. dependence, will you help me understand it??"
2.) 07:47 --- "I'm a thoughtful addiction professional who wants to get out from underneath the disease model; where can I plug in???"
