GOOD NEWS--THE SECRET TO STAYING PURE IN A DIRTY WORLD
God Wrote the Entire Bible
One way to look at the Bible is to see it as a complete course of study in order to graduate with proficiency in a chosen field.
God is the instructor, His textbook is the Bible, the Degree we have enrolled in is: Knowing God. There are 66 courses of study, one for each book of the Bible.
Every book God included is vital for some reason. Some we are more drawn to than others. Some are easier, some are well known, others are hard, mysterious, and much like the hardest classes we faced in school, we grit our teeth and plow through even when it is very hard, but:
All Scripture is Vital
If we were to continue to think of the Bible as going to grad school, we could see it as containing all the courses needed to graduate. Graduation from God’s grad school on Knowing Him would mean what 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) says. We need to start with a verse that we all know so well. But look together at the emphasis God gives to us. Please stand with me and from the screen follow along with the words from 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
• All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,
• [All Scripture given] is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
• [All Scripture was given] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Today we are opening to the final and most important of all the courses needed for graduation, it is the last book of the sixty-six of God's Word.
If the Bible is like a good graduate school, all of the courses would follow a curriculum with a scope and sequence that reflected careful planning and determinations of progression. That is exactly what we find. The last Book of the Bible, containing the last course God gave for us to know Him, maybe perhaps the most important of all. Why would such a difficult book of the Bible be most important? Because God sent it last, as the closing wrap up to everything He ever said, that’s why.
We Need to See Each Piece as a Part of the Whole
The Bible was sent from God to us. But the Bible that we hold in our hands this morning is for many of us, much like a puzzle box that has 31,103 pieces. That is how many verses there are in the Bible, and that’s how many different little bits of the “big picture” is spread across the sixty-six books of the Bible.
But God chose to end the course of His Bible with a summary, a wrap-up of everything in all the other 65 parts of the book. One of the biggest tools to getting a grasp on the Bible is to see that:
• God summarizes His plan in the book of Revelation.
• God ties together in the book of Revelation, everything He starts in all the other parts of the Bible.
• God explains in the book of Revelation, how all of the other parts of the Bible fit together.
It would be fair to say that Revelation contains the key to fitting all of the other pieces of the puzzle together, much like we turn to the front of the puzzle box, and look at the complete picture. Then with the entire scope of how everything fits, we can grab any individual piece and see a section it belongs to. We can also sort pieces into groupings and know that even if they are not completely pieced together, we know for sure what they are a part of in the big picture.
That metaphor of Revelation being the big picture on the front of the box is the key to meshing all those confusing 31,103 individual little verse pieces, that we read each time we open to any part of God's Word.

Satan: the Truth-snatching,
Mind-blinding Devil
God’s enemy and ours is the Devil who abode not in the truth (John 8:44), neither can he because he is a liar and the father of lies. Our enemy wants to snatch the truth (Matthew 13:19) from our minds.
John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. NKJV
Matthew 13:19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. NKJV
So we all face a dangerous, truth-obscuring, mind-blinding Devil who can influence people to:
• resist the truth (II Tim. 3:8); 2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; NKJV
• spread error concerning the truth (James 5:19; II Tim. 2:18); 2 Timothy 2:18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. NKJV
• turn away their ears from listening to the truth (II Tim. 4:4); 2 Timothy 4:4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. NKJV
• hold down the truth in unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18); Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, NKJV
• change the truth into a lie (Rom. 1:25); and twist it to their own destruction (II Peter 3:16). Romans 1:25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. NKJV; 2 Peter 3:16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. NKJV
So that is why God always seeks to ground His children in truth. God wants firmly hold onto His truth. The Scriptures open with Satan twisting and negating God’s truth with his lies in Genesis 3. By Genesis 6, just 3 chapters further, God destroys the whole world of sinners except for 8 and puts up a global reminder of His truth in the sky called a rainbow. God wants people to be reminded of the truth of their Creator and His expectations.

Jesus rose triumphantly over sin, death, and Hell after being captured and killed during the greatest crime the world has ever witnessed.
On a cross of wood, with carpenter’s tools, and “on a skull-shaped hill, on a sunny day outside of Jerusalem nearly 2,000 years ago when MANKIND MURDERED THEIR MAKER ”. There, on a hill called Calvary in full view of thousands of witnesses was the day the Creator was crucified.
His name was Jesus, a peasant carpenter, who had carried on an itinerant relief work across all of Israel. Thousands, tens of thousands followed, heard, and witnessed some of the mightiest acts ever seen on the planet in history. But now He hangs there:

Shouldn’t Christ have done something on the cross if He were really God the Son? Yes, and He did. As we open to Matthew 27 we are looking at the scene, which highlights the mightiest of all Christ's miracles. Matthew picks up with the drama from Noon (the 6th hour) to 3 PM (the 9th hour).
Matthew 27 records that despite Christ being scourged, nailed, and dying, nothing could stop Jesus Christ. Crucifixion, betrayal, and mockery didn’t stop Him. Not even the hatred of the Jewish leaders, and the cruelty of the Roman executioners. Nothing stopped Jesus then, and nothing stops Him today.
There are five final miracles from the Cross of Christ's Crucifixion that were recorded to always remind us that Jesus can reach out to us from anywhere, at any time, and in any way that we need His touch. To show us His mighty power Matthew first tells us that when Christ hung on that cross of wood for you and for me:

LAMENTATIONS
“WORSHIPING OUR GOD OF HOPE”
Jeremiah sits down and looks over the smoldering ruins of his beloved Jerusalem. His voice rises into the wail of sorrow - a lament. His funeral dirge over the city of God, inspired by the Spirit of God is a message for all the people of God. This book is a master crafted poem with five stanzas. Chapters 1, 2, 4 and 5 each start with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, 22 in all.
This form of poetry called an acrostic ic beautiful in form and powerful in communication. Chapter 3 is the centerpiece of this poem, with three 22 verse acrostics making it 66 verses long. The theme of the book and this middle chapter agree, as Jeremiah discovers - GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS our Great Lord!
I. The Outline:
A. First Dirge: Jerusalem’s Desolation because of Her Sin (chap. 1)
B. Second Dirge: God’s Punishment of Jerusalem’s Sin (chap. 2)
C. Third Dirge: Jeremiah’s Response (chap. 3)
D. Fourth Dirge: The Lord’s Anger (chap. 4)
E. Fifth Dirge: The Remnant’s Response (chap. 5)
II. The Message: Chapter one contains an astounding commentary on Galatians 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” There is no SECURITY apart from the LORD. Jerusalem the city portrays the state of Jerusalem the people chosen by God. Note these grim reminders:
A. NO COMFORT In v.2 “none to comfort” yet the Lord offered comfort continually to His people.
1. Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (KJV) This is the very same word as Lam. 1:2. Isaiah 40:1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. (KJV)
2. Jesus always has offered enduring comfort. John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: (KJV)
B. NO REST In v. 3 “no rest” was found by Jerusalem, yet the Lord offered and promised His rest:
1. Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. (KJV)
2. Isaiah 57:20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. (KJV)
C. NO REFRESHMENT In v. 6 “no pasture” yet the Lord promises to feed His people:
1. Psalm 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (KJV)
2. Psalm 81:16 He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee. (KJV)

Lamentations 3
When we listen closely to Christ's words near the start of His ministry, we hear Jesus say to all believers of all time, “Rejoice when you face persecution” (Matthew 5:10-12). At the end of His public ministry, this same Jesus also goes on to say that for those at the end of days, the worst is yet to come (Matthew 24:9-10).
When we listen closely to Christ's words near the end of His ministry, He tells us of a future time when all of us who know and love Him will suffer greatly; and when we add that to all of the struggles, trials, challenges, hurdles, and disappointments life brings—we get a huge amount of suffering in a lifetime.
So this evening as we turn towards Lamentations 3, we turn to the greatest reminder in all of God's Word that when there are great sufferings, during them we can find the assurance of God’s greater faithfulness.
Lamentations is a book that is about what it sounds like its about—the lamentations of a person in deep suffering. Do you remember all of the weeping prophet Jeremiah’s woes?
His testimony is the 25th book of God's Word, and it is aptly called Lamentations. Does that title suggest anything to you? It is the cry of a troubled soul. It is the testimony of a man who knew pain, weakness, and much sorrow.
Jeremiah the Weeping Prophet
But before we turn to Lamentations 3, look at the prior book, named for the prophet Jeremiah, and let me briefly sketch the life of this incredible servant of God.
Jeremiah must have had an incredible childhood. The Scriptures tell us God had chosen him before his birth to be a prophet. His family was notable in their service to the LORD. Life was exciting for the son of a high priest.

To illustrate mere emotional faith that is also dead, James uses one of the most unbelievable comparisons. He explains to us one of the inner workings of the spirit world. Only here do we see applied, what the Gospels so clearly illustrated—the complete intellectual and emotional faith of demons that can never save them. James says—
Demons Have
Strong Faith
It may shock you, but God's Word testifies that demons have faith! What do they believe? Demons have a clearly defined faith.
1. Demons completely believe in the reality of God. They have no doubts. They have seen the Lord, seen His Throne, know all about the spiritual world, and have met Jesus Christ personally. Demons could never be classified as either atheists or agnostics. They had an accurate faith in God intellectually, in their minds. You can believe all the correct facts and not be saved.
2. Demons completely believe in Deity of Christ. Demons trembled in Christ's presence while He walked the Earth. They have no doubts about who He really is. Often we hear the demons publicly stating to Jesus, “I know who You are” (Mark 5:7). Mark records Peter’s eyewitness report that whenever demons met Christ on earth, they fell down and affirmed He was God the Son (Mark 3:11–12). Demons had an emotional response to their faith, they feared, shuddered, and trembled.
3. Demons completely believe in the Supreme Power Christ held over their destiny. They even would plead for some leniency, or mercy from Jesus Christ as the ultimate Judge who held their eternal destiny in His Hands (Mark 5:1–13). Demons had a firm intellectual faith.
4. Demons completely believed in Hell and the horror of eternal punishment. They knew and testified to people that they believed in the existence of a place of punishment, and knew that they were headed towards torment (Mark 5:7), and said that they didn’t want to go there “before the time” (Matthew 8:39). Demons had a firm emotional faith.
5. Demons completely believe in submission to God's Word. They never expressed doubt that His Word was true, and they usually instantly obeyed, though a few did one final shake of their victim, or convulsion just to show their malignant hearts. As Jews testified daily in their Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4 That there was only one Living and True God “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord!” (Deut. 6:4). So as James repeats, “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder” (James 2:19, NIV). Believing to the point of fear and trembling does not save. Only a life-changing faith, produced by God within, can save.
Now we need to apply this sermon James has just preached to our lives today.
• First, an intellectual agreement or assent doesn’t save us. That is James’ point; intellectual belief is present in demons.
• Second, an emotional response, coupled with an intellectual response is also not sufficient. Demons had regular emotional responses to their faith in Christ as Creator, as Omnipotent Ruler, and as the Ultimate Judge. None of those intellectual and emotional responses prompted by their faith were sufficient.
Saving Faith is faith that is real, faith that has power, faith that results in a changed life.
So what is sufficient, real, saving faith? That is the point James makes. Saving faith goes beyond intellectual assent to facts, and a resulting emotional response to God’s Word—and continues into a life-transforming walk. True saving faith shows up over time in a changed life.

As we open to 2 Peter 3:14-17 this morning, we are coming to Peter’s fourth element in how to build an uncluttered, focused life that survives the fires of Revelation 6-19’s Return of the King.
Peter most clearly explains the Day, of the Lord’s Second Coming as King, and we need to frame our understanding of Rev. 6-19 through the other Scriptures God has already given to us.
Avoiding the Pitfalls
Peter who is writing at the end of his life, lays out for the early church these very practical keys to a life that pleases God; and avoids the pitfalls that are so easily entangling and distracting believers from their calling in Christ.
Here again, are his five lessons that revolve around warnings about materialism:
• Materialism Blurs our Purpose in Life as Disciples: Live Redemptively (v.1-9)
• Materialism Clouds our Minds with the Idolatry of Coveting: Keep Alert (v. 10-11)
• Materialism Clutters Our Lives with Discontent: Build Fireproof (v. 12-13)
• Materialism Blinds Our Eyes to Christ with Earthly Treasures: Look Up (v. 14-17)
• Materialism Corrodes Our Wills by Serving Two Masters: Obey Jesus v.18
Our challenge today is to:
Beware of Spiritual Blindness
As we stand, listen to Peter’s heart reflected in these words to Christ's Church, breathed out through Peter by the Spirit of God.
2 Peter 3:14-17 (NKJV) Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;

5—THE ULTIMATE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY BY JESUS CHRIST THE LORD: Revelation 19:11-13—As Heaven opens, Jesus rides out on a white horse as the ultimate conqueror. In Roman times the victorious general rode a white horse up the Via Sacra (sacred Way) into the Temple of Jupiter in the Roman Forum. Here Jesus is the ultimate warrior, the King of Kings.
6—JESUS RIGHTS ALL WRONGS: Revelation 19:17-21—Armageddon is the destruction of hard-hearted humanity gathered in rebellion against God the Son. This moment was seen and described by Isaiah (66:15-16); Joel (3:12-21); Ezekiel (39:1-4, 17-20). Paul (2 Th. 1:6-7); and Jesus Himself (Mt. 25:31-46). The Beast and False Prophet are cast alive into the Lake of Hell Fire where they are still alive and suffering 1,000 years later in Rev. 20:10. Thus, the false teaching of annihilation is disproved by God’s Word.
7—Rest in the Vengeance of Jesus: Revelation 19:14-21— We usually don’t think of Jesus as being vengeful. That is why Revelation 19 is so astounding! Since time began, His saints have pondered the wonder of Jesus’ waiting to avenge evil upon the earth. Then Zechariah 14:12 happens: “And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.”
8—The Return of Christ—the King of Kings: Revelation 19:11-13— John tells us Christ’s return as Judge will be seen by everyone on the planet, as the “sign of the Son of man appears” (Matthew 24:30). Jesus is on a white horse, accompanied by all the angels and saints. He instantly ends the life of all rebels.
9—The Absolute Security of Trusting Jesus’ Timing: Revelation 19:11-13—As Jesus already told us in John 5:22, 28 that the Father has committed all judgment to Jesus, and the hour is coming when EVERYONE will hear His voice. Trust The timing of His return!.
