Leo's barking alerted his North Texas family that Zoya, another family pup, had fallen through the ice in their frozen backyard pool I feel like this is the second video I’ve seen from Texas where this has happened. I just hope the folks who fell through ice to rescue their dogs got warmed up quickly. Thin ice and hypothermia are no joke and it usually takes living in a place where the immediate threat of both teaches people quickly to respect them. Hoping for warmer and better days in Texas’ future. Man Rescues His Dog From Frozen Backyard Pool | New Leash on Life The guy didn’t jump in, he was trying to walk out to the dog and the ice broke. He is lucky that 1) it was near the edge of the shallow end, and 2) there was another human with him. The correct action here is to lay down flat on the ground and slowly slide out on the ice just enough to reach the dog’s paws, then pull him up on to the ice, or continue breaking ice until he is at the edge of the pool and can be lifted out. A large percentage of the man’s weight could have stayed on the pool deck, and the weight that did go on the ice should have been distributed by being flat on his belly, not concentrated on one foot. Of course all is well that ends well, but if this had been in the middle of the deep end, a little thicker ice, and there wasn’t another person there, we could be reading about a man and his dog having drowned. Just some advice for anyone watching who isn’t familiar with ice rescue / self rescue. But why is inching along on your belly to reach dogs paws the best way, because I would think you wouldn’t have enough leverage to pull dog out, and if you suddenly went under your face is so close to the water, you might not catch a breath before being submerged. The way to rescue, or self rescue, is not to think about trying to lift or climb up onto the ice, or any other action of a vertical nature, but rather to slide horizontally from water to ice by kicking legs to achieve a horizontal body position and then swimming with arms onto the ice. Climbing and lifting motions only break more ice, and waste precious energy and time. If you’re alone in frigid water, you have no more than 10 minutes, at best, to rescue yourself before your limbs are too weak, and then you have to hope someone else can get you out. As for your face being in the water if the ice breaks - the goal of being flat is to just not break the ice, as even thin ice can support a surprising amount of distributed load.
