QUICK: Update for indoor Jalapeño pepper plant. Inside and staying strong.
The jalapeño pepper plant has been inside for around 6 weeks growing in the window. It has started to flower, but I removed the blooms so it doesn’t waste its energy trying to grow fruit. I just want it nice and strong for the spring to be replanted in the garden.

I was visiting with my grandfather and wanted to show how the tomato plants were looking and harvest some tomatoes. I also talk about the chicken wire to protect the tomato plants. Then the next day I showed the carrots that were planted 22 days earlier.

MAKING A HOT COMPOST BIN. Using grass clippings and pine needles to make a compost bin.
Started on July 29, 2020 making a hot compost bin. Using grass clippings as my nitrogen source and pine needles as my carbon source and some finished compost as a starter to introduce bacteria in the compost bin.
Made a bin out of rolled galvanized steel using a piece that was 9’ 6” long so the diameter of the bin is 3 feet across.
Here is my hot compost playlist:

Flipping a geobin compost pile
First we removed all compost from the geobin.
The total volume of the bin is 246 gallons when full. For compost volume is key, you are looking for a volume that is 3’x3’x3’ is ideal. You can compost in smaller quantities, it may take longer and larger items may take multiple pile to breakdown.
Next to reshape the geobin I leave small stakes in the ground to hold and maintain shape.
I added about 8-10 inches of compost, then some chopped up garden scraps and some leaves, followed by around 2 inches of aged horse manure and watering in at each new level. Then repeat the process until the geobin was full. Now this geobin will sit from October until spring of 2024. In spring all of the garden beds and grow bags will get topped off with compost.

5/12/2024 Wood and concrete block raised garden bed
I’ve been waiting a couple years to build this bed. I went to Lowe’s and bought the concrete corner blocks for 2 for $5, the pine 2x6x8 for $5.88, and pressure treated for the ground 2x6x8 for $7.88. The total cost was $61.28 and to fill it was all materials I had on hand. I put cardboard at the bottom, covered it with leaves an added some dirt that I dug out of the yard. I put a bunch of drink and egg containers next to help retain some moisture plus the worms really like them. Then I sifted compost and the large pieces I added to the bed first and mixed some rice hulls into the compost. I purchased the rice hulls a few years ago when I couldn’t buy perlite or vermiculite. The rice hulls do a similar job helping to create some aeration and it a natural, breakdown in around 5 years. It took around 16 wheelbarrow to fill the bed, I know the bed will settle and as the leaves breakdown I will need to add more compost to top off the bed.

Harvesting cool season vegetables.
It’s starting to heat up so not to lose the brassicas (to bolting with the heat) harvest them. Broccoli, collard greens and curly kale is what was harvested. Cut the plant low to the ground to leave the roots intact to breakdown in the soil.

A great check in, there was a very small amount of food left over from last weeks feeding. I added more bedding and todays feeding is watermelon, asparagus stems, and sweet potatoes. Next week will be 52 weeks, 1 year I can’t believe how time flies.

5/8/2022 Tumbleweed compost aerator
If your composting, I would recommend picking up this tool or a similar one. Sometimes you do need to flip the whole pile but this will see time and energy if you just need to fluff the pile and incorporate some more air into the pile.
This is a very useful tool for composting. The tumbleweed allows you to aerated the pile without having to deconstruct the pile. The corkscrew design is neat. As you turn the tumbleweed it pulls and digs itself into the compost pile. One issue is you can not go all the way to the bottom on the first attempt, you need to aerate in sections. First the top third to half of the compost pile, then you can go deeper. This was the first time I used this tool, since this video was recorded I’ve used it another 2 times and the compost pile is filled with worms.
