Stewart's Debut Season | Round 8: French Grand Prix Qualifying | Formula 1 '97 (PS1)
1997 was a year of change in Formula 1. We had the reigning World Champion racing for a backmarker, a GOAT PS1 game being released which still holds up today, and TWO brand new teams joining the grid in Mastercard Lola and Stewart Grand Prix.
One of these teams was more successful than the other, with Lola burning out so quickly that the didn't make the game...or even start a race! However, for those who don't know, the team we now know as Red Bull Racing got their start on the grid as Stewart Grand Prix all the way back in 1997. Drivers like Jan Magunssen, Johnny Herbert and, yes, Jos Verstappen, walked so Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen could run!
However, despite the advantage they had over their fellow rookie team, Stewart struggled in 1997 with only 8 finishes between both drivers and 9 Double DNFs in 17 races. So, in this series, we try to give Stewart a debut season more befitting of a team that would go on to much bigger and better things in the near and distant future, by taking the one and only Rubens Barrichello through the 1997 season in Formula 1 '97 for the Playstation.
After an impressive performance, with an unfortunate ending, at the Canadian Grand Prix last time out, we head back to Europe and Magny-Cours for the French Grand Prix. Whilst we are showing signs of improvement, Magny-Cours has always been a difficult track for me so who knows how the weekend will go, but it will certainly go a lot better with a good performance in qualifying!

After a monster last lap of qualifying, we are starting on the front row for the second time in this debut season! The laps were getting better as we went so I am hopeful that this excellent starting position can turn into an equally good finish in the race and to our season.

In this video, we take to the track at our home Grand Prix. We aren't starting as high up as we'd hoped after some good qualifying laps, but anything can happen at Interlagos, so with a bit of luck we could repay our countrymen and women's support with some points.

In 1995 a legendary driver joined a legendary team when Nigel Mansell signed for McLaren. What seemed like a great move quickly turned into a disaster when Mansell missed the first two races of the season, drove the next two before leaving the team after the Spanish Grand Prix.
But what would have happened if Nigel had made it through the whole season? Well, thanks to Formula 1 on the PS1 from 1996, we can hopefully find out!
The penultimate round is the second half of our Japanese double header as we head to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix. We have been fighting at the right end of the grid more often than not in the second half of the season, and coming to the historic and hugely popular Suzuka gives us a great chance for a great result. How good of a result do we get? Let's find out!

We have put ourselves right in the middle of the pack for the race, so the first focus is avoiding the carnage of the first lap, especially the first corner at Saint Devote! If we can do that, then we could find ourselves in a position for our best race yet, and hopefully a potential turnaround in our fortunes for the rest of the season.

After a frustrating qualifying session we have set ourselves a last to first challenge after we found ourselves at the bottom of the timing sheet. We will need some luck and some good driving to make our way through the pack but the Monaco Grand Prix taught us that we have pace in this car, so let's make the best of a bad situation.

In this video, we take the grid to start the first grand prix in our team's history. We have put ourselves into a great starting position in the top 10 so we could get ourselves some points in the first race of the season, but in F1, all the best laid plans don't always come through!

We showed in qualifying that we could piece together some very fast sectors indeed, but unfortunately none were on the same lap. However, we did manage to qualify in 12th so we are right in the thick of it with the teams that we wanted to be competing with at the start of the season, so we are still in a good position. Let's hope that we can get a clean start, and our colleagues behave themselves.......

We have put ourselves right in the middle of the pack once again but we end up going with a high risk strategy to try and get ourselves in amongst it when it comes to the business end to the race. How well it works will make our decision for us if we are going to try it again - how well did it work? Let's find out!
