Last Thursday (14 Sept), Google released another announcement about moving from the old style m-dot sites to newer, mobile responsive sites. M-dot sites are a subdomain of a preexisting site, and were used by businesses in the very early days of Internet enabled mobile devices. Responsive site designs have now been around for a number of years and enable the original version of your site to be viewed on any device automatically, rather than creating a duplicate version specially coded for mobile devices.
M-dot sites can result in duplicate content, faulty redirects and a whole lot of extra work if implemented incorrectly. With Google’s imminent shift to mobile-first indexing, potentially incomplete M-dot versions of your site will be prioritised in search over fully enabled desktop versions.
