14,397 views Mar 21, 2022 The test for adultery in Number 5, or trial by ordeal, is one of the passages that is part of Scripture, but you can't put it into the box of "it's about Jesus." Not all in the Bible is about Jesus. Everything in the Bible contributes to the story that culminates in Jesus. But you need something other than "let's talk about Jesus" to make sense of this kind of stuff. Check this out!

So, what happens in Genesis 3, if that's the explanation for all of the human evil, for depravity, you would think somebody would quote it in the rest of the Old Testament, but they don't. So that's an issue. And for Second Temple Jews, there were two reasons for human depravity: One is the Genesis 3 episode, and the other was the story of the Watchers, or 1 Enoch's version of Genesis 6:1-5. I'm not kidding about defining it, because a term like that is used in lots of different ways. If someone comes to me telling me that they had a dream or something. I won't dismiss it, I'll think about it. If I find myself in a situation described like that, maybe the Lord will bring something to mind that will make me make the right turns to the left, I don't know that. I'm willing to have that direction. But I don't know that it means anything. So I would wait and see what Providence produces. What I want is I want to see does it produce fruit. I want to see if it aligns with Scripture. And if I can't weed it out, after those two initial questions, I'm willing to just sit here on it. Check it out!

Jesus said: "the gates of hell will not be able to withstand it." And so what you have here is Jesus saying, in effect, I'm going to take Satan's domain, where he lives, the Lord of the dead, and I'm going to turn it into his own tomb. I'm going to empty the place out. If you were faithful to Yahweh in the Old Testament, you're going to be delivered from death. This is your reward: you're going to be delivered from death if you're a follower of me, because I am Yahweh incarnate. Check it out!

I am opposed to the qualitative view of the image of God; that the image refers to a quality, because it cannot be said that all humans at all stages of life's existence, have whatever this quality is, and there's a whole grocery list that the theologians have proposed; self-awareness, the ability to pray, language, etc. The biblical teaching is that whatever the image is, it's not bestowed incrementally. It distinguishes humanity from everything else in the earthly creation here. And it's both male and female. It's just there. To be human is to be whatever this is. And if you make it a quality, you can't say those things of a fetus. The little multi-cell thing in the woman's womb there, it's not praying, it's not communing with God. It's not self-aware, it's none of these things. A lot of these are all actually linked to brain function. And this view has actually been used by ethicists to say that life isn't sacred until you get brain development. It really has dark ethical implications, but we don't realize that because we're just sort of taught to think this way. And I'm opposed to that. What what the image really is, it's not a quality, the image is a status or function. Check it out!
