Fighting Game Bosses 6. TMNT Tournament Fighters (NES) - The Shredder boss battle
TMNT Tournament Fighters had three versions. NES ver. is the one I grew up with. Difficulty is set to HARD, because you can't see full ending otherwise, game speed is set to TURBO.
The Shredder isn't too hard. You only need to be wary of his arms. When he does normal standing attack he can go Star Platinum on your ass. This attack also has extended hit-box. Raph gives me an advantage over him since his torpedo attack can go over Shredder's ground wave.
Here's the big bad of the first MK game. He is basically all the playable characters plus Goro in one opponent. Funnily, since AI tends to cheat with recovery time, Goro is the easiest transformation to deal with. Tsung also has projectiles which can damage you pretty badly if you get hit.
CHALLENGE: NO DAMAGE, NO CHARGE SHOT, NO SPEACIAL WEAPONS
There’s a little trick to this fight. When you shoot him as he’s walking, it will cause him to jump in the air and fire a volley of shots. Once he’s close enough, he will fire three rings in a spread. If they touch you, you’ll be frozen in place, leaving you open for another volley. However, if you stand near him in a certain way, you can easily jump over the rings. Rinse and repeat until he’s dead.
CHALLENGE: No Damage, No Attack Magic, No Covenant Equipment, No Friendly NPC-dropped Equipment
The first real roadblock of the run. The first thing to do is to cut off the gargoyle’s tail. At +3 the spear can do that in 1-2 hits. When you’re close to it, the gargoyle will usually (BUT NOT ALWAYS) jump away from you. This will be useful later in the fight.
After the gargoyle’s HP is down to about 2/3, its buddy will join the battle. They are easy to tell apart because the second one has a broken helmet and no shield. And the one that does have a shield only uses it for punching... Anyway, these two are frustratingly good at covering each other. Don’t lock-on to retain free sprinting. The second gargoyle prefers to use the AoE fire breath, which stops it in its tracks more often. Use it to either separate the two or find an opening. Once you kill one of them, finishing off the survivor is easy.
CHALLENGE: NO DAMAGE, NO CHARGE SHOT, NO SPEACIAL WEAPONS
WindMan is the easiest boss in the game. His MO is either shoot projectiles, suck you in towards him or move to your position. Neither action is especially dangerous, as projectiles can be simply jumped over (they can't hit you at al at maximum jump height), and while his wind becomes stronger with each hit you deal him, it's still not strong enough for you to be unable to slide away.
This is the first boss proper. The key here is to do a plunge attack and then just sit out behind a shield 'till you have an opportunity to counter-attack.
Damn, I love that animation when PC is hit on the shield so hard he/she/it flies backwards.
CHALLENGE: No Damage, No Special Weapons.
Here's the King himself. His modus operandi is to just... jump around and firing Gemini Laser or trying to slash you with his halberd.
Meanwhile, ProtoMan is having a nice nap.
Ah, yes. Mortal Kombat. For many of us, this was their first fighting game. Me being no exeption.
Goro is a pain. His throw has extended range, meaning he can grap you from two steps afar. He does have a weakness. If you knock him down Scorpion's spear will connect on wake-up, giving you a free uppercut. Yay.
Now that I think about it, Goro really looks impressive.
CHALLENGE: No Damage, Hair Whip Only
00:00 Skulls
Simply strike the highlighted skull. If you take too long, it will shoot a fireball and switch to the different one.
01:01 Wheel Beast
You can either strike it with your hair, or drop it into the trapdoors by pressing the corresponding button on the wall in spider form. When it turns into a wheel, follow slightly behind it to make it easier to avoid the boss when it falls down from the ceiling.
A pretty simple fight. The idea is to keep your distance and make the doggo use its jump attack, then smack it mid-air while dodging the attack. To dodge the jump attack, you need to jump in the direction the boss jumped from. As you land, be ready to jump again because the puppy will likely use a dash attack. Its other attacks include simple slash that, despite sprite clearly having an arc, only has hitbox on a single lane; and fire breath that can hit three lanes, but opens the boss for a full standard combo.
