have you ever wondered about this picture, or seen this statue and thought to yourself, i wonder what is the meaning behind it? the man responsible for these works is Joe Rosenthal. a press photographer. On february 23rd 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, on the peak of mount Suribachi, a small american flag was hoisted by US marines. a few hours later, their colonel wanted a bigger flag in it's place. so as to be seen by all american troops around the island, he stated that he'd better get the small one back. he sent 6 marines to replace the flag. there they met joe rosenthal and explained their orders for the replacement. a marine photographer carrying a motion picture camera by the name of bill genaust was with them. He and Joe were preparing to get their shots when bill asked joe if he was in his way. Joe replied, no that's fine bill hey there it goes! Joe swung around, lifted his camera and barely got this shot. it was 31 days before iwo jima was won, and 3 of the 6 marines in the photo died in combat. Rosenthal's image would become famous and eventually be replicated into a statue at the US marine corps war memorial which is near arlington national cemetery “Iwo Jima Flag” ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npVg3MwOO_s

If you need 2 gallons of coffee to start your day, you’ll like this one. Melitta Bentz was a German housewife who invented modern coffee brewing in 1908. She spent so much time making coffee for herself, her husband, and her family, she grew frustrated with the brewing process and used notebook paper from her sons notebook to create the first coffee filter. Research indicates that she documented the original idea for the patent in the same journal. She also pioneered, in her workplace, christmas bonuses and a three week vacation. Seems like she would be everybody’s hero

hold my beer, said students in germany and austria in the late 19th century right before they hacked each others freakin faces off. Mensur dueling was a major thing in universities at the time, and what they would do is cover their whole bodies with protection, except of course, where you want the scars to be. they had to stand at a set distance, or a mensur, coming from the latin word for dimension, and duel with blunt tipped sabers sharpened about 8 inches on the primary side and 5 inches on the secondary side. First to leave a scar wins, and the loser has to drink a pint of beer as they ripped the wound open and packed a horse hair in there so the scar would grow deeper, they wore these becoming a man scars proudly, some who wanted the fit in but didnt want the danger associated, would see doctors and pay them to scar up their face. crazy. right? this persisted in germany resulting in lots of scary nazi officers. people often misconceive that it was a nazi practice but in truth, officers were most commonly made from educated gentlemen of hiher prestige, for instance who went to school, hitler himself actually banned the tradition, only to be reinstated after his death in 1945

Did you know, that during world war 1, if a French soldier wanted to be taken off the front lines, all he had to do was find himself a French pr**ti**te with syphilis. She would charge extra to infect him and he would be placed in an infirmary bed for an average of 50 to 60 days. To combat this, the French military sanctioned it’s own br**hels with regular testing, while the US banned partaking in pr**ti*tion altogether. The US had a rule, if you’ve done the deed with anybody you must report it and be tested within 3 days or you’d lose half your pay. With the disease running rampant, its understandable that they’d incur such heavy penalties but man, i just wanted to live before i die
