The debate around individualism and collectivism has raged throughout the pandemic, often causing deep political divisions and tensions among family, friends, and co-workers alike.
My guest tonight is Sir Paul Collier, CBE, co-author of Greed is Dead: Politics After Individualism, which seeks to set out practical, original, and achievable solutions to the extreme political divisions in Britain.
He argues that the age of centralisation — where people are driven by individualism and economic incentives, and that prosperity and good societies come from top-down leadership — is coming to an end and community and mutuality will drive the successful societies of the future.
Sir Paul challenges the politics of both traditional left and right, yet is nonetheless hardly a complete outsider: an economist and academic who spent five years at the heart of the system within the World Bank, he is Professor of Economics and Public Policy Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford, Director of International Growth Centre, and was made a knight in 2014 for his work promoting research and policy change in Africa.
Here on the Pandemic Podcast we are committed to questioning absolutely everything — and that can mean not only challenging the status quo but seeking out and listening to those who are also exploring some of the key questions of our time but from different angles.
Join me at 5pm today for what promises to be one of the most fascinating yet potentially challenging discussions we’ve yet had on the Pandemic Podcast.
