Barbara Park--Junie B., First Grader_ One-Man Band
Title: Junie B., First Grader_ One-Man Band Author: Barbara Park File Type: Mobi Subject:Children's Books Description:Amazon.com ReviewJunie B. Jones is thrilled. The whole entire first grade is planning a kickball tournament, and this feisty first grader daydreams about being the star of Room One. Unfortunately, where Junie B. goes, trouble must follow. And it’s called, I accidentally kicked my ball over the fence. And I didn’t want to go get it. So I had to find something else to kick. That something else turns out to be her mom’s watering can--which happens to be full at the time. Now Junie B. has an owie on her piggy toe and it looks like she won't be able to participate in the tournament. But wait! Her friend Sheldon can't play kickball either, due to a spectacular fall in the classroom. Maybe these two can come up with an alternate plan that will still allow Junie B. to be the star!Barbara Park’s inexhaustible beginning chapter-book series has all the ingredients young readers like best: humor, repetition, predictability (with a few surprises), and lots of silly action. Grown-up readers might tire of the cute malapropisms, but kids will thrive on the whole entire series. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie CoulterFrom School Library JournalGrade 1-3--In this adventure, Junie B. is sidelined by an injury and cannot participate in the first-grade kickball tournament. When her teacher offers her a chance to be a cheerleader, stage fright almost ruins her halftime performance, but the irrepressible protagonist comes through in the end. Text and illustrations work well together. Junie's distinct and authentic voice speaks to beginning chapter-book readers. Her journal entries (complete with corrected spelling mistakes) are a nice counterpoint to the straightforward plot. Classroom politics, family dynamics, and the frustrations and triumphs of growing up are treated with humor and hope. This will be a hit where the series is popular._--Ellen M. What is unique about this novel is that some of the story is told from the point of view of the alpha creatures and this causes the reader to be sympathetic of the creatures needs. span
Title: Gravity's Rainbow
Author: Thomas Pynchon
File Type: Mobi
Subject:classics
Description:Amazon.com ReviewTyrone Slothrop, a GI in London in 1944, has a big problem. Whenever he gets an erection, a Blitz bomb hits. Slothrop gets excited, and then (as Thomas Pynchon puts it in his sinister, insinuatingly sibilant opening sentence), a screaming comes across the sky, heralding an angel of death, a V-2 rocket. The novels title, Gravitys Rainbow, refers to the rockets vapor arc, a cruel dark parody of what God sent Noah to symbolize his promise never to destroy humanity again. History has been a big trick the plan is to switch from floods to obliterating fire from the sky. Slothrops father was an unwitting part of the cosmic doublecross. To provide for the boys future Harvard education, he took cash from the mad German scientist Laszlo Jamf, who performed Pavlovian experiments on the infant Tyrone. Laszlo invented Imipolex G, a new plastic useful in rocket insulation, and conditioned Tyrones privates to respond to its presence. Now the grown-up Tyrone helplessly senses the Imipolex G in incoming V-2s, and his military superiors are investigating him. Soon he is on the run from legions of bizarre enemies through the phantasmagoric horrors of Germany. Thats just the Imipolex G tip of the shrieking vehicle that is Pynchons book. Its pretty much impossible to follow a standard plot one must have faith that each manic episode is connected with the great plot to blow up the world with the ultimate rocket. There is not one story, but a proliferation of characters (Pirate Prentice, Teddy Bloat, Tantivy Mucker-Maffick, Saure Bummer, and more) and events that tantalize the reader with suggestions of vast patterns only just past our comprehension. You will enjoy Pynchons cartoon inferno far more if you consult Steven Weisenburgers brief Pynchon doesnt want you to rest easy with solved mysteries, though. Gravitys Rainbow uses beautiful prose to induce an altered state of consciousness, a buzz. Its a trip, and it will last. --Tim AppeloReviewNovel by Thomas Pynchon, published in 1973. The sprawling narrative comprises numerous threads having to do either directly or tangentially with the secret development and deployment of a rocket by the Nazis near the end of World War II. Lieutenant Tyrone Slothrop is an American working for Allied Intelligence in London. Agents of the Firm, a clandestine military organization, are investigating an apparent connection between Slothrops erections and the targeting of incoming V-2 rockets. As a child, Slothrop was the subject of experiments conducted by a Harvard professor who is now a Nazi rocket scientist. Slothrops quest for the truth behind these implications leads him on a nightmarish journey of either historic discovery or profound paranoia, depending on his own and the readers interpretation. The novel won the National Book Award for fiction in 1974. -- __
