Kirsty and Tessa: Primitive Reflexes and Why They Matter for Our Kids
Hello Everyone,

In this episode, we welcome back Tessa Grigg – educator, kinesiologist and child development lecturer at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand).
We touched on the importance of primitive reflexes in our previous conversation, and here we go into more detail about this fascinating topic. Many primitive reflexes develop in utero and provide us with instinctive behaviours essential for birthing and early development. Ideally these reflexes then ‘integrate’ into more mature cognitive processes. However, there are a variety of stressors that can interfere with this process. Listen in to hear more about these reflexes and the developmental delays and behaviours that may result if they aren’t optimally integrated. Importantly, there’s a lot we can do to address these issues and assist both children and adults to thrive.
You can check out her published research article ‘Primitive Reflex Integration and Reading Achievement in the Classroom’ here jnen-103-tess-grigg.pdf (jneuroscience.com).
