Future Decision: One Breed or Back to Mixed Flock?
For ease of management in the future, we are going to make a change when some of the birds die off: choose one breed to keep almost exclusively or go back to a flock of different breeds and not be too picky about what's there, concentrate on eggs only, not breeding to a Standard of Perfection. And, Maretta is about to hatch her fourth batch of chicks for her almost 7 years of life. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgsCvIujTaA
The country life, or homesteading life, is not a postcard fantasy. I was inspired by other YouTube videos as well as the insanely fast-paced real estate market here in our very rural area to have a little chat. Please know that this video is not meant to discourage anyone who is thinking of moving to the country, only to make them be realistic about it. I realize I'm preaching to the choir, for the most part, because my subscribers as a whole are smart folks with a decent amount of common sense, but maybe someone needs this message today.

This has been coming for awhile, but it's time. One final plea to you to fight for your freedoms, then an announcement on the direction this channel is going. As Scripture says, if a man be ignorant, let him be ignorant, so....If you have something specific you would like to see here, make your requests known. If the channel completely disappears after this video, you'll know it was not my doing.

This video confirms what we suspected, that the black cat who has been prowling our deck and pasture is not neutered. Maybe this is why our normally territorial male cat (fixed) does not challenge him.

Temperament in a chicken is passed down to the progeny the same way as body type, leg color, plumage pattern, etc. You absolutely *can* breed for good temperament in a rooster and I do it successfully.
Nothing is 100% foolproof-after all, you are dealing with an animal with a small brain, not a manufactured product, however, 99.9% of the time, every male that comes from my heritage line of Barred Plymouth Rocks is easygoing and non-human-aggressive.
No amount of "aversion therapy" will permanently change a human-aggressive rooster whose genetics have programmed him that way. Does not matter if you handle him as a chick, or don't handle him as a chick, genetics will out. Aggression is also a function of intelligence in my experience over the years. You don't breed stupid. Breed the best, cull the rest!
Hope this helps someone who is trying to understand their rooster's behavior.

Belgian D'Anvers are clean-legged and rose-combed. These are the Mille Fleur color pattern with one Porcelain rooster as alpha rooster. The original stock came from Boggy Bottom Bantams in S. Georgia (Aubrey and Aimee Webb). Three hens and the porcelain rooster, who are part of the original flock hatched, are going on 6 yrs old. One Mille fleur hen is next generation and the mille fleur rooster, Spike, is her son. Then, there is a younger mille hen who is about 3 years old. I'll not be replacing these as they pass away. They are cool birds, but just not good layers at all. Most haven't laid in literally years so can't even sell hatching eggs from them.

Got started at 2:16 if you want to skip me waiting for people to show up. Thanks to everyone who helped me last night test this livestream. My mics were not working well, tried three or four until we found one that worked well and had the right settings.

So, tell me, how does one remove wax from every crevice of a video camera? Yeah, I dropped my video camera into hot wax. Yes, I did that. I admit it. I do the most bizarre things. When I'm a goof-up, I do it in style! Fortunately, the camera seems to be working okay as witnessed by this short clip. Sigh. Just keeping it real here! At least, I didn't break *myself* this time!
