Microsoft Office macro viruses have been around since the '90s, causing all kinds of problems for unsuspecting users. Although Microsoft have made improvements in their office suite security, someone has now figured out how to use social engineering to trick people into running a new breed of Microsoft Office malicious macros. However, you can eliminate those problems by running an alternate office suite, such as LibreOffice. So yes, this a great example of Linux security vs Windows security.
Let libreoffice help you avoid malicious macros office.

In my "Why systemd?" video, I introduced the basic philosophy behind the systemd init system. I did state that systemd is controversial, but that if you're a desktop Linux user, you do have the option of using a Linux distro that doesn't use systemd. I also pointed out that if you're a Linux systems administrator, or aspire to be a Linux systems administrator, you have no choice, because the big players in the Linux server market have all switched to systemd. So Red Hat, SUSE, and Ubuntu, the big three players, are all systemd Linux distros.
Although there is systemd controversy, we do need to live with it.

Microsoft strikes again, with a borked update for Windows 10. Over the past few years, Microsoft have released numerous bad updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8. But with them, you could choose whether or not to install or delay installing updates. With Windows 10, you have no choice, because Microsoft forces you to install updates, whether or not you're ready for them. But with Linux, you can choose when or whether to install updates, and you can choose which ones you want to install. With GNU/Linux, you have much more control over your computer.

Red Hat shoots itself in the foot again by announcing that they would no longer allow the general public to download the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This will cause problems for the RHEL clone publishers, such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. It has also caused a huge backlash from Linux users, and at least some have already decided to switch from the RHEL ecosystem to community-based Linux distros such as Debian.

Last week, I told you about the Linux Samba vulnerability known as SambaCry, which allows bad guys to perform remote code execution attacks against Linux servers. Crytocurrency mining is a profitable business, so it's no wonder that the bad guys want in on the action. The good news, is that this is easily preventable. If you're a Linux administrator, you should already know how to do it. And, we also point to an article about how to prevent the attacks on Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems. We also mention how to do it on Debian, Ubuntu, SuSe, and Arch Linux systems.
