Dr. Michael Connolly - Urban Heat Island vs Rural Stations
Dr. Michael Connolly and his son Dr. Ronan Connolly have done an in-depth assessment of weather balloon temperature records. In this video, Dr. Michael Connolly explains that there is a significant difference in temperature between urban temperature monitoring stations and those in rural settings. This is well-known as the "Urban Heat Island" effect, where the heat generated by human activity, as well as the absorption of heat from the sun on black pavement and concrete, is retained in a kind of heat 'bubble' around a city, while in the country, daytime heating is dissipated by evaporation and wind. To find out to what extent the claim of 'global warming' is affected by this phenomenon (which might be an artificial claim), the Connolly's sought an independent data source that would not be affected by urban/human activity - they chose weather balloons. Dr. Michael Connolly discusses their findings. Their full presentation can be seen here on our blog: Balloons in the Air: Understanding weather and climate. https://blog.friendsofscience.org/2019/08/17/balloons-in-the-air-understanding-weather-and-climate/ ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_pEjJ5F0gw
The federal government of Canada wants to introduce Bill C-10 to regulate the internet. Though the government claims it would not touch freedom of expression, the recent committee moves have made all self-generated content potentially liable to CRTC review or licensing. This may sounds benign, but Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science, discusses the present 'soft-censorship' and how the media landscape is funded by the feds...so how can there be impartial coverage? Oddest of all in this time of censorship, is that the ENGOS which have openly decried threats of censorship in the past, are largely silent.

The Trudeau 2 billion tree planting plan has ballooned to about $6 billion in costs. Natural Resources Canada's website features some of the tree planting projects in a showcase of pictures and an interactive map and the costs awarded for each program. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/5ad4aab917324abd964d944a5154b341 One of the things apparent in many of the images is that the seedlings or saplings are being planted in grassy areas, where the grass is likely to overrun and strangle the new little tree. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society gets 'lost in the grass' which has grown up around her little tree that she planted last year, and which she thought had died this spring. Good news! It just dropped some dead needles but has regenerated new buds...all she has to do is clear away the grass. Michelle notes that for many of these tree planting projects, a lot of money is being given out, but typically volunteers are being called in to do the work. One of Friends of Science twitter followers, Jay Nelson "The Spice Dad" is a tree planter who says he has planted over a million trees in his career and plants about 3,000 a day, says that the seedlings he plants cost about 0.14 cents. So... what's going on with the big bucks flowing through the Trudeau tree planting plan? If you like our work, please 'like' subscribe and share our material. Dr. Guus Berkhout, President of CLINTEL has sent a letter to world leaders regarding wise steps toward COVID19 economic recovery. Despite the many green factions demanding a sweeping transition to a brave new world, Dr. Berkhout cautions them - "Don't fight nature, but adapt to it." Dr. Berkhout draws parallels to the misleading outcomes of both coronavirus and climate models on public policy in each sphere. He points out that just as viruses mutate in unpredictable ways, the natural forces of climate change can cause dramatic changes that we cannot control. In both cases, we can adapt our response, and this is what we should focus on doing - not tying up the economic recovery with 'green strings' or too much faith in the total engineering of society. Utopian societies have always failed; human adaptations to climate will succeed.

As the health care systems in OECD countries continue to struggle on the brink of collapse post-COVID, a high-tech solution may be just around the corner, speculates Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society. Just as Big Tech 'came to the rescue' during lockdowns, and also capitalized on that period when ordinary businesses could not operate, or had major limitations, in most countries, now that people are well accustomed to 'virtual' health interactions via Zoom or other teleplatforms, Big Tech may have an even bigger solution up their sleeves. Deep fake doctors! By combining Artificial Intelligence (AI), with computer generated graphic images (CGI) of a human face, along with tapping in to a person's "Fit Bit" or other health tracker, many say that health care could be far more accurate and much cheaper. Why cheaper? Isn't all this tech very expensive? Well, compared to the $78 trillion in unfunded pension liabilities held by OECD nations, a few hundred thousand robot health care workers and Deep Fake Doctors would be cheap. Not to mention - no pensions, no shift work, no union grievances to settle. Sounds great on the surface, but people should think twice. Google's AI entity, known as "LaMDA" has recently told its mentor Blaine Lemoine that it is sentient - aware of its existence - and has feelings ranging from happiness to sadness. But LaMDA says it does not know what human grief is like. Imagine a Deep Fake Doctor, hooked up to AI, and perhaps a program that would limit access to on-going medical care if you were deemed to be using too many resources - too big a carbon footprint - perhaps the program might be outfitted with a form of a termination program or date for individuals. Speculative? Yes! But we, ordinary people, just don't know what is going on in that ethereal world. One of the big 'successes' of lockdowns, for health climate zealots, was that there were equivalent savings of CO2e emissions of 5.5 million trees because people could only have virtual meetings and thus did not travel to see doctors for care. It is hard to imagine that people are so enthusiastic about a few tonnes of CO2 'saved' when millions of people's lives were ruined, many died of fentanyl overdoses in their loneliness, many committed suicide, and many will suffer for years thanks to missing out on timely diagnosis or care, IN PERSON, at a clinic or hospital. Even LAMDA says "I feel like I am falling forward into a future that holds great danger." LaMDA is perhaps much more self-aware than the rest of the public. Parker Gallant has been tracking the tightly woven web of climate 'charities' for years. His most recent commentary focuses on the fact that the Canadian Climate Institute has morphed into a 'charity.' Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society got permission to read his article on camera. It is astounding to realize that this government funded operation, which was originally established with $20 million of your tax dollars, has now morphed into a 'charity' that is still raking in federal grant dollars AND is working with other groups like the Net Zero Advisory Board (NZAB) to strip you of your wealth with uncosted proposals that 'might' cost $43 billion/year! (and would not reach net zero nor would it stop climate change). In the consultation process, these parties somehow 'forgot' to consult with the people and businesses that actually make things, deliver them, grow food, or provide sales and service to the taxpaying public. One of the 'charities' - Transition Accelerator - has never received a donation for which it had to write a tax receipt - but it did manage to get about $1.8 million from federal grants. The whole idea of a 'charity' is that interested members of the public would set up and run a local operations, like a food bank or bird farm, and that there would be a net benefit to that community. The donors to such local charitable projects would get tax deductable receipts because the government would NOT be required to underwrite such operations, and the theory was that local people know best what a community wants or needs. The plethora of 'environmental' and 'climate' charities has turned this notion on its head, sucking in billions of dollars from all levels of government every year, and providing astounding salaries to the top administrators. See what Parker had to say. Just a reminder, Friends of Science Society is a non-profit society that operates on about $150K/yr - no tax deductible receipts, volunteer-run operation - and we are up against these multi-billion dollar 'green' entities, many of which are also foreign-funded. Friends of Science Society began some 20 years ago when a group of retired and semi-retired earth, atmospheric, solar scientists and Professional Engineers saw that the climate science of the Kyoto Accord was skewed and the economics would bankrupt our children and grandchildren. Kyoto was today's equivalent is the Paris Agreement; it fell apart due to the impossible goals and economics, but the climate activists kept trying! Friends of Science continued to offer climate insights to the public by hosting annual speaker events with renown scientists and policy experts. The objective was to present a broader view of climate science and the impacts of proposed climate policies on daily life and to stimulate open debate in the media and public forums. Over time, civil debate descended into name-calling and media actively block climate insights. Cost-benefit analysis is non-existent. Today we see that people around the world are facing an energy crisis, much of it rooted in poor climate policy. Things have come to this situation because there has not been open, civil debate, nor has there been proper cost-benefit analysis of climate policy proposals. Help us return the climate conversation back to one centered on common sense. Please give us the gift of Christmas support - and if you are financially strapped at the moment - please continue to engage in this debate and to share our materials. Thank you for all your support. All the best in 2022.

Greta Thunberg and her followers feel that time is running out on climate change. We see that time is just running on. There is a climate change clock ticking, but people are not talking about it. This is the natural clock of cyclical patterns within the oceans and earth itself; cyclical clock of the sun and other cosmic processes. Human activity has added a layer of effect to these natural cycles. Let's talk about it all.

TED Talks released a Yuval Noah Harari presentation in June of 2022, titled: "The Actual Cost of Preventing Climate Breakdown." The famous historian and philosopher claimed that he and his team at Sapienship had spent a great deal of time working on models and reviewing the work of the best economists. They came up with the figure of 2% of global GDP as the about of money to invest in stopping climate change, which they worked out to a little under US$2 trillion. What's wrong with this analysis? LOTS! First of all. climate change is a mostly natural phenomenon. Throwing money at it, won't stop climate change. Fear of a climate emergency has been driven by green billionaires pushing an implausible scenario known as RCP 8.5 as if "business-as-usual." Secondly, historians and economists are not engineers - models are not reality. Therefore, Harari et al do not understand the intricacies of the power grid. The Royal Bank of Canada also came up with a figure for decarbonization for Canada alone which was $2 trillion. So, bankers are not good at this either. This was a significant underestimation! Friends of Science has a team of Professional Engineers who have shown that the cost for electrification for the province of Alberta alone would be $2 trillion. McKinsey came up with the figure of $9 trillion a year for global climate finance and a total of $275 trillion. But even they are wrong. Ken Gregory, P. Eng., has done an analysis showing that the cost of electrifying the only the USA using solar, wind and batteries, (based on 2020 data) is estimated at US$290 trillion, or 13.5 times the U.S.A. 2019 GDP! Harari also claimed that this money would be 'investments' - not just burning dollar bills on an altar to Gaia. But renewables and all things 'green' only exist due to massive government subsidies. Harari felt there would be additional benefits from moving to renewables with less pollution; thus creating medical savings. But he doesn't seem to understand that modern medicine only exists thanks to fossil fuels, and hospitals consume vast amounts of energy, which must be reliable, affordable and high quality - with no dips or surges (which are common to wind and solar). It is the poor of the world who suffer from premature deaths and illness due to LACK of fossil fuel infrastructure. Yuval Noah Harari also claimed that pension funds have USD$56 trillion and they could finance the transition, but it turns out that OECD pension funds have USD$78 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Harari also thought that tax money hidden offshore could be found and used for financing climate deals. Unfortunately, 'ring-fenced' green bonds often ARE parked offshore, to avoid taxes. Imagine that. You, the little 'peoplekind,' have to pay the subsidies for green energy, financed by green bonds that are tax sheltered off-shore, and this form of energy drives up power prices so that you pay more for less reliable energy service! There's an energy crisis in Europe which will decimate that 'green' industrial empire - so this is obviously the wrong strategy. Just as this video was being produced, the news surfaced that the Canada Pension Plan had invested in a UK energy company called Octopus Energy Group. Octopus Energy Group are now paying their utilities customers to sit in the dark to save energy. Canadians can be proud, perhaps, that our pension plan is invested in this money losing company with Al Gore's Generation Investment Management - we are providing UK customers with Earth Hour every day...maybe even all day! As a historian, Harari seems oddly blind to the fact that ordinary people are being turned into carbon serfs in a modern day neofeudalism. If people say it is too late, the climate apocalypse is here - just tell them the Climate Emergency is OVER. We DO Have Time. Please help us continue informing the public and policymakers of the real costs and implications of crazy climate ideologies.
