My granddaughter, with Lola being silly in the background
November 21, 2018. Babysitting my 18 month old granddaughter. Lola flinging her stuffed bunny in the background. (Notice I have to block access to the dry erase board because my granddaughter likes to erase my work!)
We can write a percent as an equivalent fraction or equivalent decimal. Percents are a rate "out of 100". Equivalent percents, decimals, and fractions all represent equal parts of the same whole. We can write any percent as a fraction with 100 as its denominator. We show how to go from a percent to a fraction, percent to a mixed number, and percent to a decimal. We check to see if our equivalent fraction is correct by using division, then multiplication by 100.

Similar triangles have 2 congruent corresponding angles and the lengths of their corresponding sides are proportional. Using the properties of similar triangles, we can show that the slope of a line is constant between any two pairs of points on a non-vertical line. The triangles have proportional side lengths and the rise to run ratios are equal. We use the slope formula and any two points to find the slope for each triangle to see the slope is constant. The graph of a proportional relationship goes through the origin. The point (1,y) gives the unit rate.

We can transform a division equation into a multiplication equation. We multiply the quotient by the divisor and set them equal to the dividend. We change the order of the factors to multiply. Division and multiplication are opposite, or inverse operations. They undo each other just as addition and subtraction undo each other. A division equation can be written as a multiplication equation using the concept of fact families. The Commutative Property of Multiplication states we can multiply in any order. Changing the order of the factors does not change the product. We show several examples.

We can represent some real-world situations with an equation. We can make a model first, to help us organize the information. We can use any letter of the alphabet as our variable, but lower case L and O are typically not used because they might be confused with 1 and 0. Using the first letter of an object may help us keep track of what we're doing. We write equations for four word problems, and equations for four statements.

We show and explain step-by-step how to subtract with regrouping in a number sentence using base 10 blocks and 10 frames. We solve a word problem that involves regrouping. We identify if we need to regroup to solve a subtraction problem.

Since corresponding angles are congruent and corresponding sides are proportional in similar triangles, we can use similar triangles to solve real-world problems. We find the proportions and solve for the unknown measure that is represented as a variable. We review the Angle-Angle Similarity Postulate. We walk-through the steps to solve a real world problem involving two similar triangles.
