Shotgun vs Hypercardioid Microphone Quick Comparison: RODE NTG-2 vs AT4053b
Recording indoor dialogue for your film or video projects can be tricky, especially when you're working in a room with a lot of echo or other acoustical issues. Most of us enthusiast, low-budget film-makers learn early on that a shotgun mic is the tool for the job, but many more experienced sound engineers suggest that a hyper-cardioid mic is better in rooms with lots of echo because they reject echo more effectively than a shotgun. In theory, shotgun mics do not reject low-frequency sound from the sides very effectively whereas a hyper-cardioid mic does.
In this short episode, we quickly compare the RODE NTG-2 and the Audio Technica AT4053b in a very echo-y room to see how they sound.
The difference is not night and day from what I can hear. The NTG-2 has more low-end and some may prefer that sound. However, most of that additional low-end response seems to be proximity effect--the radio voice sound you get when your talent is very close to the mic. The Audio Technica seems to handle the echo just slightly better and has less proximity effect.

Last year Sound Devices announced and shipped their MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 recorders and then later added the MixPre-10T with a few additional hardware features for professional sound engineers. One question I received several times was, "Can I use this to record my band and does it have overdub and punch in features? Any effects like reverb?"
In this episode, Paul Issacs talks with Cary Judd, my brother who is a profession music producer in addition to filmmaker. The MixPre-10M looks a lot like the 10T, but the operating system is re-designed from the ground up and optimized for multitrack music recording.
As a bonus for those who already own a MixPre-3, 6, or 10T, you will be able to add all of these music recording features with a plugin that runs $99. The plugin will be available some time in the summer of 2018.

When I first added V-Log to my Panasonic GH4 a few years ago, I was disappointed with a lot of the V-Log footage because it was so noisy. I was hesitant to add V-Log to my GH5 but went ahead and spent a little more time experimenting with it to see how to get the best possible footage. With the help of an Atomos Ninja Inferno HDMI recorder, I’ve learned that it is really just a matter of making sure that you set your aperture and ISO a little differently to optimize the exposure for V-Log. And with the ATOM-HDR feature on the Ninja Inferno, it is even easier to quickly dial in the exposure for V-Log. So here’s how to shoot great looking V-Log video footage on your Panasonic GH4 or GH5.

In this week’s episode, we have a look at the new RODECaster Pro II. This follow-up to the original RODECaster Pro is an ‘integrated audio production studio,’ as well as a user-friendly audio recorder and interface for streaming and podcasting. It’s also something of a real-time digital audio processor, sound pad playback device, 4-way headphone amplifier, livestream MIDI controller, and overall purpose-built computer.
