We show you how to get Lithium Metal from an Energizer Ultimate Lithium battery.
Warning: This should be done outside or in a fumehood due to the toxic gases that may be formed under certain conditions. Gloves must be worn as the chemicals and lithium are corrosive.
There are a great many types of lithium batteries and the particular chemistry of interest is "lithium iron disulfide" batteries which contain pure lithium metal and less toxic electrolyte than other batteries. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal (just lithium ions) and other pure metal lithium batteries often contain incredibly toxic electrolyte that make them too dangerous for the average person to safely open.
It just so happens that the popular Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries are based on lithium iron disulfide chemistry making them the ideal choice for the home chemist to obtain lithium.
The rolled lithium core is protected by a mini-fortress of steel that you have to cut through. The danger is accidentally shorting the battery and causing the internal materials to fuse. The video shows you what you have to go through and what to expect when opening an energizer ultimate lithium battery.

Mineral oil or Paraffin oil is a useful oil for making oil baths and storing reactive metals. It is composed of high boiling inert hydrocarbons distilled from commercial crude oil.
Amateur chemists can use baby oil since baby oil is mostly composed of highly purified paraffin oil. It's best to use oil that is unscented and hypoallergenic as that oil is purest and has no reactive additives.

In this video we process the potassium chlorate made by electrolysis in a previous video.
Overall we're making potassium chlorate from potassium chloride by electrolysis. Previous video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enf76lBNUIY
To process it, remove the electrodes and decant and filter the solution from the potassium chlorate crystals. The filtrate still has some potassium hypochlorite in it so if you want to squeeze out every last gram of yield then you can boil the solution to disproportionate it. Upon cooling a small amount of potassium chlorate will crystallize out. You can add this to the original crop of crystals. The filtrate may be used in future potassium chlorate electrolytic runs.
The potassium chlorate itself is relatively pure and consists of large crystals. If you wish to purify it and/or produce smaller crystals, mix an equivalent of 100mL of water per 60g of potassium chlorate and boil the mixture until it dissolves. Let it cool and fine crystals of potassium chlorate will precipitate out.

We show how to make chlorine gas.
Warning: Chlorine gas is toxic and this should only be performed by an experienced chemist in a fume hood.
The simplest way to make chlorine gas is to mix bleach with hydrochloric acid. While this does work it doesn't produce as much chlorine gas as the other methods. It's also less reliable since chlorine bleach usually decays on the shelf to lower concentrations. It's recommended to go with the other methods.
At this point we should note that mixing ammonia and chlorine bleach does NOT make chlorine, it actually makes chloramines. Chloramines themselves are highly toxic at these concentrations and will further react to form other toxic products like dichloramine, nitrogen trichloride and hydrazine. So it's still bad to mix ammonia and bleach, but understand it's not making chlorine gas.
The classic method is to mix Manganese dioxide with four mole equivalents of hydrochloric acid.

In this video we turn copper pennies into silver and finally to gold.
Obviously it's a chemistry trick but still impressive.
First we get 30g of zinc sulfate and dissolve it into 100mL of water.
Zinc sulfate was made back in our video on making a copper sulfate and
zinc battery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id3tL2iI0Vw
If you don't have zinc sulfate or can't make it, you can also use zinc chloride. This can be made by simply mixing hydrochloric acid with zinc metal and waiting until the fizzing stops.

In this video, we delve into various methods and tools used in analytical chemistry to determine density accurately. Starting with basic techniques using graduated cylinders, we then explore more specialized equipment like hydrometers and pycnometers. We go through how to calibrate these tools and measure density with precision, even for irregular solids and powders. We also explore how the professional instruments work.
