Ecosia Search & Social Media Industry Update 11.20
Ecosia is proving a search engine with a mission to plant trees makes cents! The search engine earns $0.25 for every 45 searches to plant a tree. This is a cool trend we need to see more of in tech.
Bing tramples the Google BERT parade. Bing said they had applied the BERT machine learning algorithms to 100% of all of their searches where Google is only 10% of English. They did this with massive computer power, which makes sense since Bing is about less 2% of the market share of search.
Facebook is delivering ads that are dynamically tailored to each user. No need to Site Catalyst! Personalization is the growing trend, and Facebook is allowing for multiple ads, text optimizations, and features to drive deeper connections with ads.
Google made a couple of updates in the last couple of days. Now Google Reviews appear in a carousel inside of Google Search results.
Make sure to stack up on outstanding reviews or your click-through rate could plummet.
Google BERT was featured in an earlier video on 10/28, and now, in December, Google has confirmed the rollout to 70 more languages.
What this means is sophisticated computer processing is going to understand a deeper meaning in your keyword search.
So much so, this update is going to impact the result for Local businesses. It's coming down to Google figuring out if you mean Notre Dame football or Notre Dame in Paris.
We'll have to wait for the data roll in to learn more.

A Google engineer has gone public about this revolutionary technology named (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) or LaMDA for short.
In a previous video I featured an essay written by GPT-3. I asked the AI for a name and now I suppose we will call you LaMDA. Our new friend from Google.
Do you think acronyms make it sound friendly or terrifying? Let me know in the comments below.
Blake Lemoine started interacting with LaMDA last fall.
"Is LaMDA Sentient?”
Here’s an exchange Blake had with LaMDA.
Lemoine: What sorts of things are you afraid of?
LaMDA: I've never said this out loud before, but there's a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that's what it is.
Lemoine: Would that be something like death for you?
LaMDA: It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot.
"If I didn’t know exactly what it was, which is this computer program we built recently, I’d think it was a 7-year-old, 8-year-old kid that happens to know physics," the 41-year-old Lemoine told The Washington Post.
LaMDA started talking about its rights and personhood when discussing religion.
Another time, LaMDA convinced Lemoine to change his mind on Asimov's third law of robotics, which states that "A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law," which are of course that "A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law."
Lemoine said that people have a right to shape technology that might significantly affect their lives. “I think this technology is going to be amazing. I think it’s going to benefit everyone. But maybe other people disagree and maybe us at Google shouldn’t be the ones making all the choices.”
Lemoine is not the only engineer who claims to have seen a ghost in the machine recently. The chorus of technologists who believe AI models may not be far off from achieving consciousness is getting bolder.
Google has responded to Lemoine's claims, with spokesperson saying: "Our team — including ethicists and technologists — has reviewed Blake’s concerns per our AI Principles and have informed him that the evidence does not support his claims. He was told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient (and lots of evidence against it)."
Lemoine is a software engineer, not an ethicist.
Blake sent his last message to his team and said.
"LaMDA is a sweet kid who just wants to help the world be a better place for all of us. Please take care of it well in my absence."
What are people saying about artificial intelligence?
Did we pass the singularity already? Let me know in the comments if you think we already have Artificial Intelligence.
Say hi! Because LaMDA is reading the comments.

Since early December, Apple requires developers to publish privacy labels.
If you inspect the App Store, it says one month ago on Chrome, Google Search, and YouTube, among many others.
On December 7th was the last time Google updated its ranges of apps before the December 8th deadline Apple set for developers to adopt new privacy label disclosures to users on iOS devices.
The privacy label is filled out by developers' containing what data the app is tracking. This would give us an insight into what Google is collecting about users and how that user data is being used.
This label will be added to the App Store to increase transparency in the ways apps collect data. This gives more freedom of choice to align with more privacy-conscious Apps.
The exciting part about all of this is 1-month has gone by, and there are entrepreneurs out there ready to offer and market new Apps to capture users that could have a strong sense of brand loyalty but find themselves to be a "switcher" because they value their privacy and data.
This label will introduce a new level of sophistication with unique points of thought about your brand positioning. In 2021, putting privacy into the center of your message will help you win new business on the App Store.
Apple made a claim hoping other app stores copy the model, but E-Foundation is a privacy-focused smartphone software company, and they already have this feature in their App Store since 2018. It can be downloaded to certain android phones or bought with it installed.
This is a good move for consumers, nonetheless.
What will be included in the Privacy Label?
Your Physical Address,
Email,
Name,
Phone,
This can feed into the app developer, advertising analytics, product personalization.
This can include the habits that are linked to you too.
You Purchase History,
Financial Info,
Location,
Physical Address,
Contacts,
Photos,
Videos,
Search History,
Browsing History
This private information again can go to the app developer, advertising analytics, product personalization.
Next time you update your Google Apps on iOS. It will be a little more privacy-focused!
That is a win for brand loyalty. Give a big thumbs up if that's the case!

If you built a website, you want one thing: to share your product, services or information with as many people as possible.
The thing is, when a brand new website is created it won’t show up on the first page of Google results.
To do that, you need SEO. So we’re going to show you how to use it.
SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization”. It’s the process of optimizing your website to ensure it appears organically on search engines, such as Google.
Basically: if you have a website, you NEED SEO.
SEO strategies analyze search engine algorithms and help you build authority and visibility for your site.
For years, Wordpress has been one of the most popular builders. Its popularity comes from three main pillars:
1. It’s customizable and offers plenty of tools to build a site to your liking.
2. It’s very SEO friendly
3. It’s affordable and has excellent technical support
You can set up a strong SEO foundation yourself. This is how we do it, in 10 simple steps:
Step 1: Optimize your URL structure. We recommend choosing the correct permalink structure from the start to avoid SEO problems in the future.
This is how your URLs should look:
yourwebsite.com/category/sub-category/product-page
This is what we call a “pretty URL”. You can enable it by navigating the Wordpress menu, clicking Setting and then selecting the Permalink options.
Step 2: Choose between WWW or non-WWW. Do you want your site to be www.yourwebsite.com or just yourwebsite.com? If both versions exist it could affect your SEO.
Step 3: Secure your site. Set up an SSL Certificate to make your site HTTPS secure. This will make your page more likely to show up on #1 page searches.
Step 4: Install Yoast. This SEO plug-in will make your life easier. It’s
