Commissioned on September 30, 1937, Yorktown was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier designed to enhance the U.S. Navy's offensive capabilities with greater aircraft capacity, improved armament, and robust design. In early 1942, Yorktown's initial engagements reflected the growing intensity of the Pacific conflict. She first participated in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands raid in February 1942, showcasing her striking power against Japanese installations. This early success was a prelude to her critical involvement in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.
