This is a poem - spoken word poetry called: We've Been Here Before by Whiskey Stevens. This is a poem about poverty, I suppose you could take it as light-hearted. I tried to write it with a heavy glaze of optimism. As always, the full poem is written in the description below. WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE The bills are piling up again but that’s okay because we’ve been here before. We’re old veterans of the wheel of poverty, the highs when its good and the fridge is half full and the lights have stayed on for months. And the lows, oh the lows, when the collection notices come and the cupboards are bare and our teeth begin to hurt and you’ve got to decide between the weed and the electric bill. It’s a good thing we’re seasoned in the art of living on a tattered string, one last thread hanging on with everything that it’s got. But the church is nice enough to also send us mail, it tells us “The end is coming”, and if we don’t cut the sh*t we’ll be down in the pit with the rest of them. They couldn’t handle the pit like we do, they couldn’t handle the fire of not knowing what you’re going to eat, or how you’ll wash your clothes, or what medication you can’t afford to buy. I’m not giving up the sh*t, the weed, the writing, the black coffee. I’m not giving up the things that make me feel free.
