Homily after the baptism of Michael, Blaine and Juris, on the morning of the Nativity of the Savior. We talk about the purpose of baptism, which aligns perfectly with the purpose of the incarnation, and in so doing, talk about a prayer said at the end of the baptism service, and a hymn sung during the Royal Hours for the Nativity.

1:05 – 2:10 Why should we try to come to all baptisms?
8:40 Prayer near the end of the baptismal service:” O Thou Who, through Holy Baptism, hast given unto Thy servant, N., remission of sins…”
O Thou Who, through Holy Baptism, hast given unto Thy servant, N., remission of sins, and hast bestowed upon him (her) a life of regeneration: Do Thou Thyself, O Master and Lord, be pleased to illumine his (her) heart with the light of Thy countenance continually. Keep the shield of his (her) faith unassailed by the enemy. Preserve pure and unpolluted the garment of incorruption wherewith Thou hast covered him (her), upholding inviolate in him (her), by Thy grace, the seal of the Spirit, and showing mercy unto him (her) and unto us, according to the multitude of Thy compassions.
In Tone VIII: “Prepare thyself, O Bethlehem! Adorn thyself well, O manger! The Truth hath come! Receive Him, O cave! The shadow hath passed away, and God hath appeared to
men through the Virgin, assuming our form and deifying our flesh. Wherefore, Adam is restored, and crieth with Eve: Blessing hath appeared on earth to save our race!”

The meaning of the words of Boaz to Ruth: “… Hast thou not heard, my daughter? go not to glean in another field; and depart not thou hence, join thyself here with my damsels. (9) Let thine eyes be on the field where my men shall reap, and thou shalt go after them: behold, I have charged the young men not to touch thee: and when you shalt thirst, then thou shalt go to the vessels, and drink of that which the young men shall have drawn.” Ruth 2:8-9

On the Sunday commemorating the fathers of the first six ecumenical councils,we read the high Priestly Priestly prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ. Certain aspects of this prayer “jump out.” Jesus said that the work he was ggivenwas finished. What does this mean? He also said that he could give eternal life to as many as his father has given him. What does that ***practically*** mean for us? We forget and need to be reminded. He also said that He had manifested the name of His Father and that His disciples had received the words. How do we receive the words of God? It is not an intellectual activity! And how do we live so that His prayer that we would be one with God is realized? 2022-07-31

2:28 – 4:58 What to do if reading the Scripture is hard, and confusing, and things do not “jump out”.
5:14 – 10:19 “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.” (John 17:1-2)
10:19 – 12:04 “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” (john 17:4)
12:06 – 14:44 “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.” John 17:6
14:44 “- 16:44 “For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.“ (John 17:8)
16:44 – 17:48 There is no “must”. There is no “should”.
17:48 “Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are” John 17:11
20:11 – end “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.” John 17:12-13
