Update on Tweety's growth. She's now 6 weeks old, considered to be a pullet, and doing well! Though she still tends to stay within 2 feet of her mother Gracie, Tweety is now getting a bit braver and is occasionally testing the distance between them.

We can use the strategy "make a table" to help us organize and keep track of the amount of money we have in the bank, our bank account balance. We can use a table, or ledger, to record our deposits, withdrawals, and our current balance. A checkbook is a small book that contains checks that can be filled out to make payments. It also contains a table to keep track of money deposited or checks that were written. When we write a check, we decrease the amount of money we have in our bank account. When we make a deposit into our account, we increase the balance. We use addition and subtraction of decimals to track our bank balance. We can use rounding and estimation to see if our math is reasonable. Tables are used to organize information into a format that is easy to see and understand. A format is a pattern, plan, or arrangement. We add and subtract decimals just as we would add or subtract whole numbers, by regrouping when needed. But, we must make sure our decimal points are lined up straight. Dollars are the whole numbers of a decimal and the cents are parts of a dollar as the tenths and hundredths. We solve four problems involving addition and subtraction of money.

A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units. A ratio is a comparison of quantities of the same type of units. A unit rate is a rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit. Rates are often expressed as unit rates with a denominator of 1 unit. When two quantities being compared are both fractions, the rate is expressed as a complex fraction. A complex fraction has a fraction as its numerator, denominator, or both. They're also called compound fractions. We walk-through three different problems which involve finding unit rates. Per, for every, for each, can all be used to describe rates. When we write a rate as a fraction, the quantity that comes after one of these phrases will go in the denominator.

We can solve and record the product of 2-digit factors by using either partial products or regrouping. We do a quick review of multiplying with partial products, and a quick review of multiplying with regrouping. But, it's best if you have seen video 3.4 and video 3.5 to learn about multiplying with partial products and multiplying with regrouping. We discuss the benefits of using partial products compared to the benefits of using regrouping. We begin with the ones place when using regrouping because we might have a regrouped number that will need to be added to the tens place. We use Mental Math to identify relationships to find a missing number. We solve three word problems that involve 2-digit multiplication.

We can use tables and graphs to represent real-world problems involving equivalent rates. We fill our table with equivalent rates and use the table columns to make ordered pairs. We graph the ordered pairs and connect them with a line that begins at the origin (0,0). A proportion is an equation that states that two ratios or rates are equal. If two quantities have a proportional relationship, the ratio of one quantity to the other will have a constant rate of change. If two ratios or rates are in proportion to each other, we'll be able to multiply or divide both terms by the same number to find equivalent ratios or equivalent rates. We see how we can use a unit rate to complete a table of values that are proportional. We use the formula d=rt to find distance, rate, or time of an object moving at a constant speed. We can solve for any of these quantities as long as we know the other two. We see what happens if we switch the labels for the x and y axes. When graphing a ratio or rate from a table of values, our scale will be determined by the greatest value for each quantity and the size of the grid.

Breaking apart a subtrahend breaks the subtraction problem into smaller problems that we can solve by using mental math. We use a number line to show how to break apart a subtrahend to subtract. We solve two word problems that involve breaking apart a 2-digit subtrahend to subtract. We look at two word problems and decide if we should solve them by adding or subtracting.

In this lesson we're going to discuss and focus on meters, decimeters, centimeters, and millimeters. There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter. The metric system is based on the number 10. 10 smaller units equal the next greater unit. We're introduced to powers of 10 and exponents. 1 meter is one power of 10 greater than 1 decimeter, so it is equal to 10 decimeters. 1 meter is 2 powers of 10 greater than 1 centimeter, so it's equal to 100 centimeters. 1 meter is three powers of 10 greater than 1 millimeter, so it's 1000 millimeters. Because the meter is the basic metric unit of length, each metric length contains the word meter, the abbreviations all contain the letter m. We can use multiplication to find how many centimeters are in 5 meters by using multiplication. We can use different metric units to describe the same length. Since the metric system is based on the number 10, decimals or fractions can be used to describe metric lengths as equivalent units. We think of 1 meter as one whole. We find the fraction or decimal of a meter from a given amount of centimeters, or decimeters. We compare different metric lengths using less than, greater than, or equal to. We put equivalent measurements into a table.
