Hey everyone! Doctor Ben, not a real doctor here! Today I'm going to cover how having tight hips can lead to lower back pain. The body is a pretty complicated thing and one lever not able to do it's job means all the other ones have to work a little harder.
I'm going to use walking as an example. If your hip isn't able to extend far enough behind you, then either your gait changes and your don't walk correctly. Or your spine flexes to make up for the lack of flexibility in your hips.
Over time this extra spine flexing will lead to overused lower back muscles and extra wear and tear on your spine joints. You need to restore mobility and strength to your hips and retrain your body to do the movement, in this case walking, correctly.

What IS the difference between exercises and functional movements? A while ago I did a video on why I though pull-ups weren’t a functional movement and from comments I’ve received, I’m not sure I did the best job explaining my point. So I thought I’d take a broader approach and cover the question in general.
So in this video I’ll cover what I consider to be an exercise and what I consider a functional movement. And I’ll also talk about the differences between the two. Also remember, this is my opinion based on my years of experience, research, and training. No one has the final word on what a functional movement is or isn’t.

Today I'm talking about using movement with intention to address my shoulder restriction! I've been doing a lot of research recently on a lot of different modalities that work to recondition neurology. All of this sort of came together a few days ago and I decided to try setting a conscious intention for each workout and for each movement.
In just a few sessions, I've noticed that my body responds much more strongly to workouts I've set an intention for than workouts I haven't. In just a few sessions I've noticed that my shoulder is already loosening up. That's not to say that just the intention has made my shoulder loosen up, but that the corrective action is much more helpful when it's done thoughtfully!

As a trainer I was often confronted with clients who had a desire for a quick fitness goal outcome. And it's true, there are quick life changes. But these kinds of changes are usually the tragic and incredibly painful ones. The ones that we have very little control over.
Change that you have control over will take a lot of time and attention. You will have to diligently apply yourself day in and day out. You will fail again and again. When you finally succeed, your success will be built upon these failures.
Don't hope for a quick and sudden change. Instead apply yourself and build your own success!

I'm finally doing it! I've wanted to for a long time. I'm doing the Wim Hof 10 week course! I want to share the experience though. So here's day 1 of the Wim Hof 10-week course! I have tons of experience in cold water so I'm really excited to see how cold water after the breathing exercises compares to what I'm used to.
My normal experience with cold water is you just have to suck it up and eventually your body mostly adjusts. To make this course extra exciting, I've just moved to Colorado so I'm kicking this off in the wintertime in the mountains. I'm expecting the first cold shower to be shockingly cold!
If you're interested in the Wim Hof method or his online courses this is only the first video over the length of this 10-week course. I'll share the whole experience as I go along. I'm sure there will be some laughs, but I hope it helps you decide if the Wim Hof 10 week course is right for you or not!

This is an extremely simple combo today. It's a series of movements that get you from laying face down to standing. Set your timer for 10 minutes and keep it up till the timer goes off.
