As mentioned on the point of HMT, fees and collection charges are intended to encourage both parents to collaborate. In addition, charges contribute to the cost of running an expensive service.
A DWP spokesperson said:
“Child Maintenance is designed to balance affordability for paying parents with ensuring children receive the right level of financial support giving them the best start in life.
“All calculation decisions made by the CMS can be appealed through the mandatory reconsideration process and beyond that, to the Independent Tribunal Service.”
