Guyatone Kent Americana Restoration Part 1: FIXING DEAD PICKUPS
In this video series we'll take another 1960s Japanese guitar basket case - a 1964 Guyatone Kent Americana Model 564 - and do all the little necessary repairs to make it playable again. In this Part 1 video, we will assess the overall needs of the instrument and fix a couple dead pickups by replacing pickup windings and magnets.
Other models from this Kent Americana Series include the Model 546, 550, 551, 552, and 561.
This is a hand-wired, custom amp made from a vintage Supro Calypso Blue cabinet and a Hammond AO-29 chassis. The circuit has an almost exact clone of a Marshall JCM800 in the preamp with an 18-Watt Marshall style EL-84 power section. The rectifier is a tube GZ34. The speakers are 2x10" Eminence Legends. Cab is finger jointed solid pine. It is believed to be an original Valco cab from the 60s. The baffle, grill cloth, and Supro logo were added later.
The tone is OUTSTANDING! If you like the tone of the JCM800 or late 70s JMP 2203 and 2204 series amps with the Master Volume, but don't need 50 or 100 watt beasts, this is your ticket! The 18-Watt style output is more than enough for most gig situations. The tone is clear and punchy with good headroom, yet gritty when pushed into overdrive. Not that it needs them really, but if you are the type who likes to get your dirt with pedals, it takes pedals very well. Any tube screamer type pedal will send this into lead heaven.
To my knowledge, there isn't an amp like this on the market. Marshall's EL84 amps made currently are all made with wave soldered PCB boards and aren't anything like this in terms of the circuit or the tone. This thing will eat the little DSL401 combos for breakfast. Like Mike Tyson, it feasts on the children of DSL401s.

Here's a model 4101 Marshall 112 combo with 5881 power tubes. This amp had red plating EL34 output tubes when I got it. The fault was found to be with the C15 capacitor in the bias supply. Also needed a changed Master Volume pot on Channel 1. While I was at it, I went ahead and moved the pots to the chassis and ran wires to them (a reliability improvement). I also demo the tone about halfway into the video before I realized I needed to change a pot.

In this video, we'll take a look at Kentucky Headhunters guitarist Greg Martin's early 1980s Mesa Mark IIB 60W combo. This one has several factory options such as the Graphic EQ board and Reverb. He's complaining it's too noisy. We'll try to determine why and along the way, we will discuss why even vintage Mesa amps are so hard to work on and why many techs don't like taking them in for repair. This one appears to have also been modded at the factory (perhaps later?) from the typical Mark IIB schematic with a post effects level control which operates like an overall Master Volume for the preamp. In the end, we will substitute a 12AU7 for the 12AX7 in the V1 position and demonstrate how that has little effect on the amount of overdrive these amps can produce. Hard rock lead tone is one thing they do VERY well.
Since publishing this video, a viewer has alerted me to the fact that this example has a popular factory mod done by Mike Bendenelli "Mike B" at Mesa. It includes the post effects level control on the back panel and a movement of the effects send and return from V2A cathode follower to another point. The change allows V2A to act as a traditional gain stage, thereby increasing the overall gain of the amp and putting it closer to a Mark IIC+ in terms of overdrive.

1 Telecaster + 2 6L6 power tubes + 3 knobs all cranked to 10 + 1 Weber 15" speaker = a veritable diarrhea of tone.
Sounds almost like a cranked Marshall. Gritty, ballsy, with plenty of midrange bite. Just a sick-sounding sleeper of an amp.

Scored some Sennheiser HD500A open back heaadphones at Goodwill a while back. They worked great for a while, but one side developed a bad coil. In this video, we'll investigate what the problem is.

In this video we'll do an electronics service, repair and modification on a rarely seen amp from 1959 that is remarkably similar to the tweed Fender Tremolux of the day. This amp was badged as "Guild Masteramp" Model 66-J originally, but who really made it? We'll explore the history of the amp and modify it to add some modern features like effects loop and cascaded gain stage that expand the tonal range and usefulness for live and recording. Was this amp made by Multivox amps in New York or Ampeg of New Jersey? Or maybe both?

Here is something I've been noodling around with. It's a slow to medium paced blues arrangement of Amazing Grace. The guitar I'm playing is a 1957 Guild M20, the same model moody folkster Nick Drake made famous. I have a couple more versions I might upload too.
This particular M20 is all original. It's very light, very resonant, and plays great. It's also for sale if you're interested. Message me for details.

I bought this 1946 Emerson Model 534 AM/Shortwave Tabletop Radio for $5 at an antique mall. The power cord was completely shot, and radio was marked "AS IS". But after replacing the cord, this thing amazingly just worked! In this video we will replace all the caps anyway and fix the speaker cone, but HOLY CRAP! Is this thing bulletproof?
