The majestic saguaro cactus is found in the southwestern Sonoran desert and can live for up to 200 years.
The Saguaro's journey begins as tiny seeds, dispersed by birds and mammals. After its first year, the baby saguaro is only about 1.5 inches tall.
By age 15, saguaro reaches about 1 foot tall.
At around 30-50 years, it begins growing branches.
At 75 years, the Saguaro can be 10-15 feet.
Between 100-150 years, the saguaro enters its reproductive prime, sprouting creamy white flowers after the first seasonal rains.
By 150 years, it towers up to 40 feet high.
The elder Saguaro can live to 200 years with multiple branches arching as high as 50 feet.
Even in death, these cacti leave a legacy, as their dried skeletons provide homes for birds and animals and nourish the ground beneath them.
