Paul Gautschi of Back to Eden fame uses chickens to compost food scraps and garden waste. I've been doing the same thing for years after seeing his method. Today I harvest five gallons of lovely compost from the hen house and show you how. With my simple compost sifter (a bent piece of hardware cloth!), it's easy. Chicken composting is the way to go for low-work compost. Just throw everything compostable into your hen house or chicken run and then let the chickens eat it, manure it, turn it, eat it again, and then - voila - you're ready to sift and take it to the garden!

Actually, you might want to wait a bit... and plant more gardens. That's what we're doing. My bet is the bottom of this thing is a long ways away. So plant Pak Choi! Lots and lots of Pak Choi!

There are times you just want to compost some spoiled beef stew. Or fish. Or fettucine Alfredo.
Composting meat and other "yucky" items may not work the best in a backyard bin thanks to rats, dogs and other pests.
Here's how I compost the nasty things instead of throwing them out... and grow pumpkins (or melons) at the same time. I call them "melon pits." Pit composting will allow plants to take what they want as they grow and I've found it works quite well. Give it a try!

My brother Brian the Firefighter had a bunch of scrap wood, so he decided to build a cheap chicken coop. Actually, it might even be a free chicken coop, other than the time involved. Big enough for those little silkie chickens.

Look at how amazing this place looks as it emerges from the brush!
Today we clear the brush and vines from the center of our new property and discover some food along the way. Also, Rachel's brother visited us over the holidays and took some drone footage, so you can get an idea of what our new land looks like from the air.
Piece by piece, we will open up this new land and decide where to build our house and plant our gardens.

Want fruit faster? Graft onto your seedlings. Just make sure you grow the tree up a bit before you let it fruit.
In reviewing this video, this tree may actually have been air-layered or started from a cutting, not grafted. It does the same thing with citrus, however, bypassing the juvenile period and leading to much faster fruiting than you get from a seed-grown fruit tree. On the down side, when you graft, you know exactly the type of fruit you're going to get, instead of getting to see what your seedling might produce. Also, in case you're burning to know, this is a Ponderosa lemon tree.
If you pluck off blooms when a grafted tree is young and let it concentrate on growing roots and a strong trunk, the tree will end up much stronger and more productive than if you let it make fruit when tiny.
