AT GROUND ZERO OF THE GREATEST EVENT IN HISTORY--LISTEN TO JESUS & REMEMBER WHAT HE SAID
As we open to Luke 24, we are joining those disciples on the first Resurrection Sunday, who loved Christ with all their hearts. Luke captures the fullest account of the first moments of Resurrection morning in v. 1-8.
Those faithful women are there at the scene, unlike us who are twenty centuries removed: they are at Ground Zero of the greatest event of history. Think about what it must have been like to have experienced, what we read about here:
GROUND ZERO: RESURRECTION SUNDAY MORNING
At least five women have gathered, and then begun their mission on that very first Sunday morning following Christ's crucifixion and burial.
They started walking through the Jerusalem of Christ's ministry, Palm Sunday arrival, Crucifixion, and burial; walking before dawn, it was quiet and strangely silent as they carried the oils and spices they had prepared for properly burying Jesus Christ.
While they are walking through those dark and quiet streets, and out of the city gate, God has sent an angel to open the Tomb for them; the earthquake and the blinding brightness of the angel knocked the soldiers out and they are paralyzed with fear and then scatter.
They walk into the Garden, around that Tomb where soon Jesus will be seen, and mistaken by Mary Magdalene for a gardener.
They are not far from the crucifixion site where Christ died, earlier that weekend.
The group of women entering by the faint light of early morning, find the Garden, are shocked at the already-opened tomb and can see the “exceedingly large” stone is rolled away from the door.
They go into that dark, stone-cut chamber, and see inside that now-empty tomb for the very first time.
They are the very first witnesses of the Resurrection, these five-plus women have seen that Christ is Risen as He promised, and as yet don’t even know that:
THE GREATEST EVENT OF ALL TIME IS COMPLETE
Here before us in Luke 24, we have the inspired record that these women are at that very spot, on that very day of Christ's Resurrection morning; and there they will get the very first message from God Himself after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Thy Kingdom come”: That second phrase is the summary of the constant repetition of the word “Throne” (eleven times) in Revelation 4-5. That is a reminder that God is the Great King of all the Universe. He sits enthroned in Heaven. We bow with all of creation before Him.
That bowing starts when we bow in the humble repentance of salvation to Him as our Lord, Master, and Savior.We live a life of reverent submission, which is what walking in the Spirit, pleasing God, and a life of progressive sanctification is all about.
“Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven”: This third phrase bridges the scene of us in Heaven worshipping around the Throne, and us here on Earth growing in our desire to love, serve, and follow our Lord and our God. But this phrase is also a conundrum: why does such a powerful Omnipotent God allow evil to run amok? When will He finally put and end to all rebellion and sin, and finally right all wrongs?
Each time we pray we are asking God to come back and take this rebel world back under His direct control, that prayer will be answered in God’s perfect time.
But we also pray: Lord, bring me under Your control. I want to be zealous for you. I want to do your will and redeem my time for what pleases You.
Invite God’s rule over every part of your life today as we stand and pray those wonderful words of reminder back to our Redeemer!

Do we as present-day believers get to escape all of the dangerous times of death and destruction of the Tribulation? In a precise, accurate, Biblical, and theological way the true answer is: YES. Christ’s church is not destined or appointed to go through that wrath (I Thessalonians 5:9).
However, if we go through just the normal struggles that many face today, and most have always faced—it may seem like the Tribulation to those of us in the English-speaking world. In historic perspective, we Americans are living in a bubble, and I believe the bubble—is already starting to pop.
Are we to prepare for the demonic invasion of Satan’s rampage through the earth in the Tribulation? No, but are you prepared this evening for what most believers alive on earth today, and throughout the past six thousand years, have faced? Probably not!
For all of the history of the Earth, for MOST believers, life for God has been reduced to three words: frequent hostile persecution, constant inescapable affliction, and earnest supplication for the protection of loved ones.
Every day there are more voices around Christ’s Throne in Heaven, more saints who kneel raising the fragrant worship of praise to God, and more redeemed lives who bless the Name of their Redeemer. Because:
Worshippers Increase
Daily In Heaven
One of the avenues of enlarging the worshippers of Heaven is through the martyrdom of saints. More believers have died for their faith in the last hundred years than have died for Christ in the other 1,900 years since the Cross. That is what Jesus said it would be like in Matthew 24:7-9.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
Remember that many of Christ’s saints are suffering and dying around the world today. Persecutions are as old as God’s people. Saints were persecuted in the Old Testament as were believers in the New Testament. Even a casual reading of the book of Acts will find no less than 47 different events that involved harm, mistreatment, and persecution of those early believers.

The Anti-Christ is the WORST human who ever lived.
Today we are about to see one of the facets of ministry that excites me so about God and His Word. I like to call it the: Big Picture or Panoramic View of the Bible. We started many weeks ago looking at Revelation 6. By the second verse of the chapter, God was introducing us to the first of four horsemen. The white horse represents the “antichrist” influence Satan has always sought to pour out upon humanity. But now God shows us that the influence is taking the form of the most malignant person ever to live.
SATAN's person introduced in Revelation is a figure that God's Word has described in so many ways and places. This morning I’d like to explain to you why it takes so long to go through the verses of Revelation, the answer is simple if you understand the nature of prophetic Scripture.
The Bible is completely unified, interconnected, and woven together by God, just like all of the various organs and systems of our bodies. One element within God's Word are Biblical prophecies, which are also interconnected, and run through every corner of the Bible much like nerve cells are woven through our human bodies. So, when preaching the Bible there are two valid methods that can be used:
• ONE method is to focus solely upon just one verse or passage out of the over 31,000 verses of the Bible; and to work only through the words and ideas of that verse alone, and then go on to the next. That is called textual preaching, or sticking to only the verse or text of the message.
• The OTHER method of preaching is expository preaching, which sticks to the text; but it also adds the weight of what God has said about that verse from any of the other 31,000 verses of the Bible. What we are doing in Revelation is this type of expository preaching of the Word.
All of the 404 verses in the Book of Revelation are incredibly tied to what God began in Genesis and is in the process of finishing. God has given pieces of information, tucked away in the words of the Prophets about the events in the Last days. Each of these are powerful lesson about His character, and His plan, and teaches us more about how to worship and serve God through every season of our lives.
Now, using the expository method of study, let me show you the immense weight of all that God has previously told us in the rest of the Bible, about the coming false messiah called the antichrist. We began to meet this worst human who will ever live, as we stepped into Revelation 6. But as we did we found a person about whom there are: 27 Chapters of the Bible and counting.
TODAY we need to pause and think about how many different chapters of the Bible are used by God to describe this evil servant of Satan. Here’s the tally so far:
• Jesus talks about him in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 (that is 3 chapters);
• Paul describes him in 2 Thessalonians 1-2 (that is 2 chapters); then
• John describes him in 1 John 2 & 4 and 2 John 1 (that is 3 chapters);
• Revelation devotes chapters 6-20 to describe his impact on humanity and his fate (that is 15 chapters); and now in
• Daniel we see him in Daniel 7,8,9 and 11 (that is 4 more chapters).
So this worst of all humans who ever lives is already the subject of 27 chapters of the Bible. That is quite an extensive coverage, and there are more we haven’t even touched. Think about this man with so many different names in the Bible: the man of sin, the son of perdition, the beast, the lawless one, and the Antichrist.
Satan EMPOWERS the Worst Human Ever.
Of all who have ever hated good, hated God, and hated Christians, the Antichrist will be the pinnacle. If we were to take all of the worst persecutors, deceivers, and malignant terrorists and stew them until they boiled down to the essence of evil, this is what would pout out: the man of sin, the son of perdition, and the false Christ. Paul’s communication to believers used the imagery of the world around them.
Life revolved around the gods. Holidays, festivals, athletics, travel, and even daily work, all fell under the dominant influence of cultural religion. Towering above everything else in life, the temples of those gods stood as constant reminders of the need to worship the gods.
In his letters, Paul uses many illustrations from the world to communicate truth about the Christian life. Four are prominent:
Army or the military (“Put on the whole armor of God”), Several times, for example, Christian living is compared to warfare. Paul counsels us to endure hardship “as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Tim. 2:3) and to “put on the full armor of God” (Eph. 6:11).
Architecture (“You are the temple of God”)ICor.6:19.
Agriculture (“What so ever a man sows, that shall he also reap”)in Galatians 6:7.
Athletics. In Philippians 3, it is Paul the athlete. Bible students are not agreed as to the exact sport Paul is describing, whether the footrace or the chariot race. Either one will do, but my own preference is the chariot race. The Greek chariot, used in the Olympic Games and other events, was really only a small platform with a wheel on each side. The driver had very little to hold on to as he raced around the course. He had to lean forward and strain every nerve and muscle to maintain balance and control the horses. The verb “reaching forth” in Philippians 3:13 literally means “stretching as in a race.”
Often Paul uses his surroundings to frame various messages he sent to the churches in his epistles. He uses the Roman soldiers as a backdrop for spiritual warfare and armor. He uses the athletic games of the NT world to describe--the race, the prize, the crown for the struggle of wrestling, and boxing our body into submission.
Can you see Paul leaning against a massive pillar in the Roman Forum, seeing all the swirl of first-century distracted life and then briskly walking back to his quarters to pen these words to the saints at Rome, on Crete in Titus, and at Thessalonica? Look up. Focus above. Long for Christ and His presence, not the earth!
Corinth Racetrack:
Everything about our daily lives Paul compares to the Ancient Olympic footraces. Here in this clip you can see one of the most complete settings: starting blocks, finish line, the judges seats and the length of the race course. We need the reminder to "run the race" always "looking unto Jesus" as God reminds us in Hebrews 12:1-2.
The Race (Gk. station).
Paul was particularly fond of the figure of the race. He uses such phrases as “run in a race” (1 Cor. 9:24), “running well” (Gal. 5:7), and “run in vain” (Phil. 2:16). This is also the figure used by the writer in Hebrews 12:1-3.
Of the different games, the New Testament mentions three: racing, boxing, and wrestling.
The race is mentioned most frequently. In each of the three pictures of athletic life as employed in the New Testament, there is a prominent, special viewpoint of spiritual life and effort.
UPWARD--The race looks forward to the heavenly goal, to the “high calling of God in Christ Jesus,” to the realm above (Phil. 3:14). This is a graphic picture of Philippians 2:12–13: “Work out your own salvation… for it is God which worketh in you.” Each believer is on the track; each has a special lane in which to run, and each has a goal to achieve. If we reach the goal the way God has planned, then we receive a reward. If we fail, we lose the reward, but we do not lose our citizenship. (Read 1 Cor. 3:11–15 for the same idea, only using architecture as the symbol
INWARD--Boxing points to our opposition to the enemy in us. Paul at least so employs it: “so fight (lit. box) I, as not beating the air: but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage” (I Cor. 9:26,27).
AROUND--Wrestling refers to our fight with the powers of darkness around and beneath us. Thus Paul says: “Our wrestling (Gk. pale) is against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness: (Eph. 6:12).
Paul Explained His Life by Three Pairs of Athletic Metaphors. 2 Timothy 4:7.
· “Fought the good fight” that speaks of our relationship to our flesh: We box our own flesh, knocking out each advance it makes.
· “Finished my course” speaks of our relationship to the world: We Finish the race.
· “Kept the faith” that speaks of our relationship to our adversary the devil: We Resist him like a wrestler.

On the night of the first Lord’s Supper, Jesus models an attitude that we must choose to have each time we come to His Table.
Do you remember?
The Problem They Faced
On the evening of the Last Supper, there was a problem among His disciples that Jesus had to address.
While Satan waited at the door,
While the High Priest plotted for Christ's life, and
While the Roman cross stood, not far away…
A greater priority than all others was Christ's—His disciples had to be cleansed by Christ's humble, sacrificial love.
Often our lives have the same problem that Jesus saw among His disciples.
Jesus knew that there was a competitive spirit in the hearts of His disciples.
In fact, approaching the Last Supper, the disciples were disputing over which of them was the greatest (Luke 22:24–30).
The hearts of His disciples contained un-forsaken selfishness, disagreements, and contentions.
They had allowed their jealousies, impatience, and ambition to pollute the hallowed atmosphere of worship; and none of those are acceptable at Christ's Table. Listen to Luke 22:24
“Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.”
An Unforgettable Lesson in Humility
So at that Last Supper, Jesus gave them an unforgettable lesson in humility.
By His actions, Jesus rebuked their selfishness and pride.
The more you think about this scene, the more profound it becomes.
It is certainly an illustration of what Paul wrote years later in Philippians 2:1–16. Peter must have recalled the event when he wrote his first epistle and urged his readers to “be clothed with humility” (1 Peter 5:5).
It is remarkable how often the Gospel of John reminds us of Christ's humility even while magnifying His deity:
“The Son can do nothing of Himself” (John 5:19, 30).
“For I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will” (John 6:38).
“And I seek not Mine own glory” (John 8:50).
And of course, John ends with the account of Christ's ultimate expression of humility through His death on the cross.

HOW TO KNOW GOD IS REAL
God has made hundreds of promises to the direct descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—know as the nation of Israel, the Jewish people. In fact, there are more verses and chapters of the Bible are devoted to the Jews, the Nation of Israel, and their future on Earth before the end of the world—than any other subject or topic in all of the Scriptures.
All of the promises and predictions that God made are part of His offer to us that identifies Him as the true God. We could boil all of those hundreds of promises down to 12 clear groups.
We could even more narrow the field of the hundreds, and the twelve to what we could call the “Big Three” promises God has made. These are the focus of many of world news keepers these days.
These three are red alerts for any student of Bible prophecy. God says I will stake my entire reputation on the predictions that: 1. the Jewish people will be acting as a sovereign nation; and 2. in possession of Jerusalem at the end of days; and 3. they will begin seeking to build a temple, that will cause such a stir, that all the world’s nations will be against them.
But, before we go to see the 6th of those promises, we need to start in Isaiah and see who exactly made those promises, and even more importantly, why. The One who talks to us when we read the Bible, God Himself has staked His trustworthiness on whether or not He can accurately predict the future. Always remember that:
PROPHECY IS THE TEST
TO SHOW WHO IS GOD
God has left His signature, the proof that He is who He claims to be—in the form of prophecies (God explaining future events in clear details that can be verified). So the huge amount of prophetic verses in our Bible is a strong and comforting place to encourage our trusting God. As we begin open with me to Isaiah 41:21:
"Present your case," says the LORD. "Bring forth your strong [reasons,"] says the King of Jacob. (NKJV)
Only the One and Only True God can predict the future with absolute accuracy!

Do troubles and trials push you toward God – or away?
Today, look back over your week. How is your spiritual health?
Has it been a week with trials, troubles, or struggles?
Did pressures increase at work, at home, in your health, or finances?
And then what happens inside of you?
Did you cry out to the Lord, fall upon His grace, and turn from any wicked way?
Or did you seethe in anger, wallow in self-pity, or worst of all harden your heart to spiritual things?
The test of pruning (which is affirmative) and chastening (which is disciplinary) is in our response.
That is one of the simplest ways to test what is going on in your life.
Pruning always draws us closer, chastening initially can push us away.
TEST #1: When troubles came this week, did you remain joyful, did you read God's Word with hunger, and talk to Him often in prayer? A fruitful believer that is experiencing the nearness of their Heavenly Father pruning rises to God’s challenge. We move toward the Lord.
TEST #2: Or when troubles came this week, did joylessness fill your heart, mind and life? Did your relationship with the Lord, seems blighted by sadness or lethargy? Did the Word of God seem unimportant, boring, and dull? We often initially move away or grow cold toward the Lord.
OUR FATHER WANTS THE BEST FOR US
With His heart full of love and mercy, OUR Father the Vinedresser is trying to bring into our lives this morning, the greatest possible blessing. Listen to these words from a paragraph entitled “Obedience” from Chastening, a booklet by James H. McConkey. God comes to us in the positive discipline of pruning, or in the negative discipline of chastening. How does He do that?
It may be through the suffering of your seeing carefully made plans replaced by keen disappointment.
It may be through the suffering of bereavements that tear from your presence – precious loved ones.
It may be through the suffering of temporal losses and broken fortunes.
It may be through the suffering that stalks into your life through the willfulness and sin of others.
It may be through the suffering that sometimes seems to bring you to the brink of a broken faith and a broken heart.
It may be that out of your very agony of heart and soul the eternal God of love and mercy is seeking to bring into your life the greatest blessing that can enrich and glorify that life – the blessing of your human will yielded to the will of God.
And to be yielded to the will of God means more than silver and gold, more than gratified desires and ambitions, more than the pleasures of friendship, more than all the praises of men, more than all the prizes of fame, and more than the attainment of all your highest earthly aims and strivings. This is the richest and deepest of all blessings – to be swallowed up in the will of God.

Jesus Gives the Only True Map of the Future—The lesson Jesus gave them and us is that when you are trying to understand the plan of God for the future, don’t listen to people that misrepresent God's Word and try to deceive people into things God has not said. Whether it is the occultic induced words of the 16th Century mystic Nostradamus or the misguided predictions of the 21st Century Harold Camping. Avoid anyone who twists, distorts, or goes against the clear plan of God written down in His Word.
Jesus said also especially beware of those who claim to be Christ. There have been many false Christs over the centuries. Even in modern times from Sung Myung Moon who founded the Moonies, to David Koresh of the 1993 Branch Davidians: we have many who claim to be Messiah or the Christ.
For a moment look at v. 24 and let me explain what many of us haven’t really thought about: the connection of Islam with the events of the Tribulation. Jesus said there will always be false prophets, and we clearly think of Hinduism as false, and Buddhism as false. But in recent times, so-called Christian voices are saying that Islam is actually not false because they believe in the same God as we do, and even believe in Jesus.
