TOP TEN MYTHS FROM MESOPOTAMIA
Welcome to my latest video, Top Ten Myths of Mesopotamia! This video explores some of the most compelling myths and legends from ancient Mesopotamian history-- including the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Sumerian creation myth, the epic of Inanna, the story of Enki and Ninmah, the city of Eridu, and the gods Marduk and Anu.

Mesopotamia is a region in the ancient Near East between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which is present-day Iraq and Syria. Thousands of years ago, the people of this region developed a unique civilization that left behind some of the most enduring legends in human history. In this video, I'm going to tell you all about those stories and my top ten myths of Mesopotamia.

First, we'll look at the Sumerian tales of the creation of human beings. According to legend, the city god Enki and the goddess Ninmah collaborated to create the first human out of clay. Scholars believe that this may have been a myth to explain the origin of humanity.

Next up is the Epic of Gilgamesh. This lengthy poem tells the story of a Sumerian king who embarks on a quest to become immortal. Along the way, he meets his equal in the wild man named Enkidu, and together, they face many challenges, including a monster called Humbaba. In the end, Gilgamesh is only able to obtain a type of immortality through the dissemination of his story.

Then, we'll examine the epic of Inanna, which tells the story of the goddess of love and war, as she journeys to the underworld and is rescued by her loyal servant. Scholars believe that this myth may have been originated to explain the cycle of life and death.

After that, we'll look at the Babylonian creation myth, which was written down in the Enuma Elish, which explains how Marduk became the ruler of the gods and created order out of chaos. This myth reflects how the Babylonians thought about their place in the world.

The myth of Anu, the sky god of Heaven.

Then, we'll look at the epic of Etana, which tells the story of the legendary king who was said to have flown up to the heavens in an eagle-drawn chariot. This may have been the earliest example of a heroic quest and reflects the Mesopotamians curiosity about the skies above.

In the eighth place, is the flood myth which is found in most cultures with many variations but all with the same basic plot of a great flood sent by the gods to cleanse the Earth.

Ninth is the Gilgamesh-Enkidu friendship which is a central theme of the Epic of Gilgamesh. This friendship between two equals is seen as an integral part of the heroic quest and something worth aspiring to.
