Life Is an Adventure, Miserable Drudgery but So Worth It | Tolkien Reading Day 2023
It’s Tolkien Reading Day again, so it’s time for Tolkien YouTube to bring you plenty of extra content! This year’s them is “travel and adventure,” and if ever there was something Tolkien handled realistically, it’s the rough and tumble of what we romantically call “adventure,” which translates very well to life as a whole.
The final chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion tells us of Earendil's attempts to sail to Valinor to beg the Valar for aid in the war against Morgoth. Will he succeed? What will be the consequences?

Middle-earth is a realm of high fantasy, so there’s lots of magic and Medieval-style technology, but there are hints of more advanced technology as well….

In my recent video on the Tale of Adanel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcOISb-59rw&pp=ygUTdGFsZSBvZiBhZGFuZWwgZmFsbA%3D%3D) I discussed how Morgoth seems to have taken a very different approach to dealing with Men as compared with Elves, but why would his strategy change?

Despite radically different settings, themes, and frameworks, the Harry Potter stories have some rather interesting parallels to The Lord of the Rings.

"On Fairy Stories" is a lecture delivered by Tolkien in which he goes over some of his thoughts on the fantasy genre, its purposes, proper audience, and value as an art form. It's full of gems, so I only have time to cover one theme of the essay. You can get it in several different collections, and I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/Monsters-Critics-Essays-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/026110263X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479694515&sr=8-1&keywords=the+monsters+and+the+critics+and+other+essays.+j.r.r.+tolkien
