On January 26th 1945, audie murphy was leading a platoon through a clearing near the french town of Holtzwihr when around 250 german troops, 6 panzers and artillery ambushed them. Murphy ordered his men to retreat into the trees and began calling in air strikes. The panzers opened fire on their machine-gun nest and set an M 10 tank destroyer on fire. Audie climbed atop the burning tank destroyer, using the mounted 50 caliber gun, still calling in air strikes, he held off the entire german company. Audie limped away from the burning tank destroyer wounded, earning him a medal of honor. When asked why he did this, all he had to say was, they were killing my friends. Audie Murphy came out of world war 2 the most highly decorated american soldier. In february 1915 the germans would try again optimistically for months with 40 millimeter cannons and air bombing support, lost. In july 1915 under new field marshall von hindenburg the germans got serious. They brought 14 battalions including 7000 ground troops, 30 heavy artillery guns and 30 gas batteries to commence chemical warfare, setting the stage for one of the most epic last stands of all time…. The Germans placed barbwire traps and waited till the wind was in their favor. They bombarded the fortress with gas, annihilating the defenders: or so they thought. The germans fastened their gas masks and advanced on the fortress, and what they then saw was the stuff of nightmares. A little more than 100 russian soldiers survived the gas, emerging from the cloud with torn rags partially covering chemical burns on their faces, spitting up blood and pieces of lung, foaming at the mouth, screaming and charging.
