CysterWigs.com -- How I wash my synthetic wigs (products, technique, etc.)
Some people think that you shouldn't use fabric softener because it is flammable or bad for the hair. Most hair products are flammable. Fabric softener ceases to be flammable if you rinse it out correctly, making this less flammable than most leave-in silicone treatments and synthetic hair care products. It also won't hurt your synthetic wigs. Does fabric softener hurt your polyester/rayon shirts? NO. Synthetic hair is an almost identical type of textile fiber. I've seen comments on Reddit and other places where people are convinced that fabric softener is bad for synthetic wigs. It's completely UNTRUE and generally perpetuated by people who don't rinse it out enough or are trying to sell wig care products. Make sure you check your sources. If someone who has an economic interest in selling these products (like me) tells you to try fabric softener first, then it must be a pretty decent option! The only people who shouldn't try this are people with petite heads. Fabric softener will encourage the elastic on the perimeter of your wig to loosen up faster. GREAT for people like me with a big head. Not so great for folks who struggle to get a secure fitting cap. Folks with petite caps should stick to the synthetic safe shampoos instead. (PS: Avoid Brandywine products, as they can deposit an ashy blue tint to light colors, resulting in dull, grey looking hair.)
